New Core 2 Duo build not booting :(

had the bits for a while but only got around to putting the bits together today.

have a :

6600 C2D
Intel D975XBX 'Bad Axe' mobo - Rev 304
2GB G.Skill PC6400 ZX
Gainward 7950 GX2
Silverstone 650 W PSU

all went fine until i turned it on. the fans spin for 2 secs then stop. press the button again and same happens.

i thought it might be the GPU and it needing a bios upgrade to work so i swapped it for a 6800GT. same prob. no output to the monitor at all.

trying to try now with just 1 stick of RAM. no joy at the moment.

no sound at all from the onboard speaker

anything else i can try?
 
This may be silly, but check to make sure your CPU fan is plugged into the right header.

Clear CMOS, try a different PSU if you have one. If all else fails, reseat the CPU.
 
RAM? There's been a lot of trouble with systems not booting due to (functional) RAM needing greater voltage than 1.8V.

You should be able to get to POST even if you don't have a CPU fan connected.
 
tonight i plan to try booting with it outside of the case. if thats a no go, i will try to swap the CPU for an old PD 805.

i cant see it being the RAM, i mean both sticks wouldnt be totally dead would they? 1 with errors i can see (has happened before) but not 2 totally dead sticks
 
I always have to ask people this question:
If your board has the 8pin power connector for CPU power, did you plug in all 8 pins? I've seen many people forget to plug in the 2nd set of 4-pin power for the cpu and the system does exactly what your system is doing.

Not dead sticks, but incompatible sticks. As i said it has happened, check the motherboard forum for the thread on the Bad Axe board, it might be a known problem.

If you can get some cheapest of the cheap DDR2 4200 or 5300 to test with that'd be my next step.
 
already ordered the cheapest 256 meg stick i could find from crucial (checked compat with my mobo). if that wont work with it, its deffo not a RAM issue. needed a spare stick anyways - hate not having any spare parts. have loads of DDR but no DDR2

doubtful, but i hope i ordered early enough to get it tomorrow
 
MB is shorted out on case. Not enough power possibly (is the 4pin plugged in completely?) or dead MB.

It is not RAM as the motherboard would report that with a series of beeps (as they do with CPUs also)
 
not the PSU. absolutely not the PSU. it does remind of when i first built my 1st PC and didnt know about the standoffs lol. screwed it direct to the case. 😀 got that to boot eventually tho but couldnt change FSB.

i am hoping it is just a shorting issue
 
why couldnt it be PSU? did you put a volt meter to all the leads? Maybe the 4 pin is dead? don't just assume because its new it works. If you're SURE its not the PSU through actual elimination, then its the standoffs or the MB itself. Hook it up outside of case to eliminate shorting out.
 
the PSU was used until recently powering a DFI ultra-d mobo. tested that again and still works fine.

Fishy007 - yep, all conns connected (plus the extra molex to the mobo)

will try taking the mobo out of the case tonight

Not always, there's been several people who've had issues with RAM and exactly these symptoms.
 
I have had the same thing happen in the following circumstances.

1)CPU was Hosed.

2) PSU was bad

3) Mobo grounding out in the case

I think if the RAm was hosed he would get a beep code.

found after checking the manual online from work (OEM board so no manual), the cooler covered the CPU power plug

just plugged that one bloody connector in and it boots fine. even boots into my prev install of XP (the one from the DFI mobo - loads of found new hardware etc tho)

bloody happy now 😀 (and feel a little bit of a sweary for missing this 😱 )
