New Core 2 build - issues posting

So I went to Fry's today here in Downers Grove, IL and put together some parts recommended here on the forums. My last PC was a P4 2.53GHz, Abit IT7-Max, 1GB RAM, and an old GeForce3. No problems building it. Granted it's been a while, here's my specs and problem:

Antec P180B
Corsair HX520 520W PSU
Intel E6750
Gigabyte P35-DS3L
2x 1GB Patriot PC6400
EVGA 8800GTS 320MB


It plug just these barebones parts in. Mobo seated and screwed in. Just the power switch plugged in. Plug in the PSU, power it on, and the fan spins at about 1/4 speed for 1 second, then stops, then repeats over and over again.

To me I think it might be a bad motherboard. Honestly I'm a little aggrivated after spending $1200 and I think I may just buy a Dell laptop with a good graphics card if I can't get this resolved. Hopefully Fry's will accept me returning all of these components.

I also used an anti-static strap the entire time I was building this system...

Edit: Now just the PSU fan spins and only when I hold down the power button.

I'm packing it all up... I'm gonna look like a 'foo with all these bags walking back into Fry's tomorrow.

Fry's WILL take it back; however, I suspect something isnt installed correctly, seated correctly, etc. Do you have your video card plugged for power with the dongle? Have you tried re-seating the CPU?

Yep to both. I reseated both the CPU and double-checked the GPU has it's extra power connectors plugged in.

I would just try exchanging at fry's (the mobo) and try again before scrapping the whole thing. I know its frustrating, but in the long run it will be worth knowing you have the exact system you wanted and didnt have to compromise.

Yeah, don't give up just because you got a dead motherboard or whatever. You picked your components well, you're gonna end up dissapointed with a laptop that won't be half as fast as that PC

I just looked at Dell lappy prices. It's a shame you can't get the 17" non-xps with a decent graphics card anymore.

I'll try returning just the mobo, cpu, and psu today in hopes I can get it working still. If that doesn't work, maybe the 8800. It's hard to troubleshoot this issue when the case doesn't even come with a speaker for BIOS diagnostic beeps.

They are putting electronic "beepers" on the motherboard which eliminate the need for a case speaker. Don't know if your mobo has that, it should.

Do you have another video board to try?
I had a similar problem 6 months ago. No video output. No cpu fan spinning.
When I plugged in a different video board the system booted.

You might also try reseatting both the video board and the memory if you have not already done that. After I got my system running, I tried my 8600gts video board again and it worked. Maybe I hadn't seated it correctly the first time around.

Try resetting the BIOS. Make sure the the CPU fan is plugged into the right plug; a lot of the newer boards won't boot if they don't get a signal from the CPU fan that it's turning.

I think I found the problem. The power supply connector (main) does not completely fit into the DS3L. I went to Fry's and got a new mobo, RAM, CPU, and PSU and it's doing the same thing. I'm going to try a different type of board and if that doesn't work PSU, as maybe they got a bad set of Corsairs?
