CONDOMS for 13-year-olds could soon be on sale in Britain ? sparking outrage.

The new-style contraceptives hit the shelves in Germany yesterday and makers Durex want to launch them in the UK next year.

But campaigners were furious last night over the move, claiming it will fuel an under-age sex boom.

The condom is 49mm wide ? compared to the 52mm standard version ? and is easier to put on.

Durex say it is designed for the younger, less experienced users.

A spokesman said: ?It is aimed at youths between 13 and 16, where a not insignificant number engage in unprotected sex.?

The average British teens first have sex at 15. And we have the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Europe.

Matthew O?Gorman, of Christian charity LIFE, blasted the launch as ?sick and irresponsible?.

He added: ?We know that teenagers engage in risky behaviour. If it?s messing around on roads or taking drugs, we teach them not to ? because it?s bad for them.

?But when it comes to sex, we do the opposite ? by throwing condoms at the problem.?

One fear is over whether condoms provide adequate protection against sexually transmitted infections.

But the Family Planning Association welcomed the move, adding: ?All initiatives that promote young people to have safe sex should be encouraged.?

well look at it this way:

you can't stop kids having sex without going to extreme measures, so if kids are going to have sex anyway, why not make it easier for them to have safe sex?

Some 13 year olds have sex...and it's usually the poor trash girls being taken advantage of by the male ghetto thugs. Yes, I'm generalizing, but I was in middle school once too.

I think we should take safety belts out of cars, because the best way to teach people to not get in accidents is to provide them no protection should they choose to drive. Or, at least, it's reprehensible that we provide an adjustable safety belt because clearly people too young to drive are under 5' and don't deserve protection that fits them properly.

I would think the kids that have sex at 13 do not have proper role models in their life to guide them not to be a six-teen your old high school drop out with a POS of a life

Bad argument, there are plenty of people, including members of this board, that are completely against seat belts.

Or you can look at it this way:

by giving out condoms to 13 year olds you are telling them than you expect them to be having sex, making it so that they have no qualms about doing so.

I'm not saying that the topic of the OP is right or wrong, I just think that we have to understand that there are some negative ramifications to go along with the positive aspects. I do volunteer counseling for HS students in the US and most of them tell me that having condoms given to them at school makes them and their friends think that "most kids their age are having sex frequently" and why else would they be given condoms.

I'm hoping that someone soon will figure out a real solution to having condoms available without "promoting" teen sex.
