I think I've finally figured out exactly what I want 😛 But I just wanted to post and make sure I'm not making any big mistakes with the parts I chose, and that everything will work together.

thanks 🙂 and I already have an 80gb internal and a 500gb external, so that's covered.
as for the video card- i'm going to be using just the integrated for the time being, and in a few months I plan on upgrading to a really nice PCI-e card... I just simply don't have enough money for one at the moment.

That's a good idea, there will be a lot more options by then. I like both AMD and Intel, but the Intel dual cores are really cheap, so maybe you should go that way because they are relatively future proof. The PD 805 is $130 and the PD 920 is ~$270. Personally I find them insane deals. The AMDs perform much better but since gaming is not a major concern, a Pentium D might be the better choice. It has DDR2 if that matters at all. If you did not order the stuff yet, you should make the switch...I would...

Um, no way. An X2 3800+ will outperform Both the 805 (which completely sucks) and the 920 in games AND applications. And you'll have hotter temperatures with the Pentium D AND use more power. The only reason you'd get a Pentium D is if you want to try some insane overclocking, or you just love Intel for whatever reason.
 
I'm not a fanboy, because i like both. If gaming does not matter, then an 805 will suffice. I know, the X2 3800 rocks and I would get one. i'm just suggesting that to him because he can just upgrade it later. I just don't know if he wants to pay double for a X2 3800 that's all

edit: I'm frugal so I would get an Athlon 3500+ single core, but it's your choice 😀

Well the 805 is extremely slow, so slow I think it would be worth it paying double for the X2 3800+. It's clocked at 2.66 GHz, has only 1MB of L2 Cache (I believe), and a 533 MHz FSB. Even the 920 clocked at 2.8 GHz, w/ 2MB of L2 Cache and an 800 MHz FSB cant keep up with the X2 3800+ is just about anything. Good thing about the 920 is 65nm, aka big overclock, and the fact its relatively cheap for a dual-core.
 
haha alright evenmore. thanks for the replies everyone. i'm on a pretty tight budget right now, so i think i'll stick with the PS that case comes with, and upgrade it when i get a new video card in the future. as for the 2gb of ram... is it really necessary? i think 1gb would be enough for now...

For $37 more, it's well worth it, and the RAM is better anyway. I would highly recommend getting that Case and PSU I listed, it only comes out to around $10 more than what you have there and it's well worth it. That's $47 worth of upgrades, but remember you're saving $44 on the CPU, so for $3 more than what you originally planned to spend you're getting a whole lot more. If the cash matters that much get rid of the floppy, with a DVD burner you dont need it.
 
hmm... i'll consider it. just the thing is, i'd rather buy it from the store i linked to above. and besides, newegg doesn't ship to canada (where i am) anyways.
 
what do you plan on doing with the computer? Heavy gaming? Light gaming? Photoshop.. just surfing the web?

I ask because you have some nice parts picked out, but they are more in line with light gaming or web surfing with occasional photoshop. If your a big photoshop/graphics designer you will want 2GB of ram, and if you game you need a graphics card.

Right now the system you have picked out is going to be a nice Counter-Strike rig (original version) with some lightall details on lowest 1024x768 gaming on newer games.

I would consider going Intel or single core Athlon if your looking to do serious gaming, you need a dedicated graphics card even if the CPU you go with is cheaper. Dual core is nice but it doesnt help gaming much, and spending $350+ on a CPU with an $800 total budget is not the most efficient move.
 
the reason i went Dual-Core is because i'm going to be doing lots of photoshop, web design, 3d modelling etc. type work on it. i'm planning on upgrading the RAM to 2gb soon after i buy this, but for now i just don't have enough money. i'll also be doing some gaming on it... not sure whether you'd consider it "light" or "heavy" but i'll be playing some madden 06, nhl 06, need for speed, half life 2, etc. maybe once or twice a week.
