Nice upgrade!

yeah the latest patch just puts the option into the menu, but i've had it on static lighting for a while through the console :))

But man, I must say...your screenshots have given me a lot of hope. I'm wondering at what FPS all your games are running...especially Oblivion on such high settings. And is that really a screenshot of Quake on low textures? It looks worse than the original Doom/Wolfenstein. o_O

oblivion is on max settings (nothing forced thru the nvidia control panel though, all in game settings) and it runs smooth as butter. it stutters for maybe 2 seconds when entering a new area (or time of day). The only other time it slows is in forested areas (like outside imperial city), and it still gets ~40fps even then.

Indeed. It looks as if it were running on a Nintendo DS.

> haha why would u even try to play those "newer" games with that video card?

because they are still fun.

I normally end up turning off the "eye candy" and even the sound. They have next to nothing to do with actual gameplay.

That said I went from integrated nvidia 6150LE (or whatever graphics) to a 7900GS. Wow. I thought the change was incredible and more than worth the $120 upgrade.

But to my wife: "It looks the same to me".......

yeah, just think that in 5 years our $500 video cards will look like the before shots compared to the Xfire-18 setups we'll be using.

alright, I'm signing off for the night. hopefully my computer will still be crunching away in the morning! If I can just keep it above 3.5 I will have salvage at least a tiny shred of my dignity...

Wow. It almost seems like you're losing a tactical advantage in Quake 4... all those extra details are distracting! I guess it's an irony that visual glory somewhat inherently hampers one's competitive abilities.

Anyone who spent 4 years using an Nvidia FX card deserves a medal imo.

Surely though, adding a bit of ram and a newer video card over the past four years shouldn't have been a major bank buster.

No reason to have suffered gaming on that card for so long.

Nice :D

It is somewhat ironic how detail games is indeed a bit more distracting in MP games though.

Lots of people i know turn settings way down for competitive MP games...i liked it cranked though...can't live w/o my eye candy.

I do that to some degree, although more to keep the framerate high than anything else. I don't really pay attention to graphics in multiplayer games anyway.

Your ISP should provide a decent bit of online storage. I've been using Comcast's online storage for years to host images/files. Every few years they add a few extra GB onto the total so I doubt I'll ever run out anytime soon. Its also pretty handy for moving files around between home/work/school.

But ya grats on the upgrade, huge difference for you. :) I had a similar gaming epiphany back when I upgraded from a 9700pro/6800GS on a 19" to my current rig and a 24". I'm sure you'll get the same enjoyment out of your rig for months/years to come. :)

heh, nice. I like the before and after pics of Q4 the best; the before pic looks like a game made 10 years ago.
