I built my first computer a few days ago..My dad's an electronics engineer, so he emphasized the threat of static discharge. Here are the parts:

Intel BOXDG965RYCK LGA 775 Intel G965 Express

ASUS EN8600GTS SILENT/HTDP/256M GeForce 8600GTS 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250310AS 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB

Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 Conroe 2.33GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor

Rosewill RP500-2 ATX12V v2.01 500W Power Supply

Sony NEC Optiarc Black 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM IDE DVD-ROM Drive
ZEROtherm BTF90 92mm Silent UFO CPU Cooler
Kingston ValueRAM 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800

The computer powers up as though its booting, but gives me no beeps or video output, and shuts down 35-60 seconds later no matter what.

I've tried a lot of different things, but if I've overlooked something dumb, or if anybody has recommendations of things for me to try, please please please let me know.

make sure the 24 pin main and the 4 pin 12v rail are both securely plugged into the mobo, and that the correct 4 pin plug is used.
you may need to get a multimeter out and verify the voltages, manually.

I would check what the two previous posts above said and did you use any type of arctic silver or anything on the CPU? I've seen them overheat that quickly and shut down before.

the 12x2 and 2x2 are correct and plugged in right. I checked and I'm getting 12v and 5v. I'm still getting the same behavior..I also noticed that it stays on longer the first time I boot it up after turning the power supply on, but after it shuts down the following boot attempts are significantly shorter.

The video card is getting power.
I used the grey grease that came w/ the cpu. do you think trying it with the stock cpu fan my give me different results?

Still no beeps from the mobo, and no video output.

Thanks for the help so far.
