New computer wont boot up

Just built a bare bones pc for my grandmother, its basically an internet only pc which might also do some word processing. Specs are as follows;

Asus A7V8X-X mobo
Athlon Sempron 2200+ cpu
Lite on DVD-ROM
L&C 350W PSU
256mb DDR400 Corsair
nVidia GeForce 2 Ultra

I tried booting it up with just the cpu, ram and vid card and got nothing, no beeps. The monitor gets no signal, just stays in stand by mode. I tried resetting the BIOS, got nothing. I thought maybe the cheap PSU that came with the case was crappy so I plugged in my Antec true power 550W and that didnt do anything. cpu and ram are brand new. vid card and mobo are a few years old but were working when I took them out of my old computer. Any ideas? Thansk.

Look at page 1-3 of your manual, which has a color picture of the motherboard. Item 8 on the picture is the BIOS chip. It should have a white sticker on it and one of the numbers should be 10xx, designating what BIOS it has. What BIOS does your board have installed?

the number is 1003. Let me guess, I need to update the bios for it to work with the sempron ship? Or is it incompatable all together? I remember looking this up on asus' website and it said that it was compatable.

I always over look something. So to update the BIOS, I will need to put in a CPU that IS supported(which I have), update it, then put the sempron back in right? Or is there a way to do it with NO cpu in the mobo?

The only other option I can think of would be to order a new BIOS chip (and a chip-pulling tool) and have the new chip pre-flashed with the new BIOS. Badflash.com is one place that does that.

But if it were me, I'd just scrounge the For Sale & Trade forum for a used AthlonXP with a Thoroughbred or Palomnio core instead 🙂

ok, I think that the CPU in my brothers old computer will work, Ill just have to pull it out, if it doesnt then Ill go to the for sale section. Thanks.
