New Computer Won't Boot Up

Hey guys, sooo I built a new computer and so forth. I have everything put together and went to turn it on, but nothing powers on. I have double checked all the connections, reseated the cpu and heatsink, vid card, drives and everything.

Basically what happens the green LED (it is located at the very bottom corner of the pcb close to the PCI-X x1 slot) on the motherboard lights up when their is power to the system, the back case fan moves a mm or so and then nothing happens.

Now my system setup is as follows:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Quad Core Processor LGA775 Kentsfield 2.40GHZ 1066FSB 8MB Retail Box
Asus P5K motherboard (vanilla ed, no extras)
Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400 2GB 2X1GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 CL 5-5-5-18 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory
WD 500gb SATA2 HD

Now after doing some reading I have found out that it might be necessary to update the BIOS of the motherboard to actually recognize the CPU, but is it possible to actually do this without the CPU seated in the socket?

There are two 4 pin power connectors near the CPU, make sure they are plugged in. AFAIK the P5K should support a Q6600 with the BIOS it was shipped with, even if it was not recognized correctly, it should still at least POST.

Try resetting your BIOS first. Follow the directions in the manual.

If that doesn't work, take the board out of the case and try again. You may have the board shorted to the case. Look carefully at the I/O ports on the back. Any EMI springs on the shield stuffed into a port? It's easy to do sometimes.

There is only one 4 pin power connector by the CPU...I double check the board and double checked the manual to make sure I wasn't just blind.

Reset the bios still nothing...I am going to try a few other things and then i will update.

Thanks for the help so far guys =).

Sounds like a short.

Why some people don't bench test the mb, cpu, vid card, and a stick of ram on a new build is beyond me.

I have the exact same set up and have run through different configurations because I am having a completly seperate issue. Mine boots up but after 10 seconds the monitor goes dark. Also the power indicator on the tower goes out and fan stops so I assume that the computer is off. I believe it is related to Bios but in the short amount of time I have I can't make any sense of what I am seeing as I get a one second snap shot of the Bios.

Any way for your issue at hand when I removed the four pin power connector by the CPU it does exactly what you are describing. I think you might look and make sure the Pins are not pushed back in. Then do a quick continuity check with an Ohm meter.
