New computer question

My friend is coming back from camp in a few days and we are talking on MSN, he says he's earned about 600 to burn. At first I thought all he needed was a cpu, mobo, and ram and he'd be good to go but I forgot that his old system is a Dell case and the mobo is gone, the rest would be useless (he got rid of the hdd, etc).

He said he looked at a site and they had good prices... and I looked and it seemed they did. For about 600 he can get this setup, http://www.ibuypower.com/ibp/s...figurator.aspx?mid=119

He doesn't need a keyboard, mouse, and speakers, but needs all the computer components. Do you think that site has a good price for those parts? Like I said.. seems so to me. Anyone think they can build better for 600 USD than that site?

1. IBuyPower doesn't sell components... they sell systems.
2. Yes

I meant that if someone did put a rough list list to demonstrate that building all that for under 600 is viable, he doesn't need those items. I know IBuyPower sells systems.

And if you think so, mind giving me a rough list? I tried putting one together and went over by 100... =S

Depending on his needs, of course.
I know he wants an OK gaming rig... He wants to play COD4 on high if that's any indication to what he wants.

Ok then here's a small list:

This lot, and you've got $100 left for a case.
Consider the Gigabyte P43 DS3L board, and perhaps the Intel E7200 instead of the E8400 to save a few $s.

Oh, a good $600 PC can easily be built from scratch. Here's one option, but there are many others:

$60 430W Antec EarthWatts w/$30 MIR
$25 Samsung DVD Burner
$75 2x2GB Adata DDR2 800
$60 250GB Western Digital HDD
$120 Intel E7200 combo w/Biostar
$120 Geforce 8800GT
$90 BIOSTAR TForce TP43D2A7 w/$10 MIR + combo w/E7200

Combo deal: $20 savings
Shipping: $10
Subtotal: $540

Now just pick up a case for $60 and you will have yourself a better gaming machine than anything on ibuypower.com for under $600.

edit: Whoops, I forgot the mention the $40 in rebates. That extra $40 could go to upgrading to an E8400 or to an HD4850. Or nothing. His choice.

Hello, sorry for the wait.

His budget is now 800 dollars, what do you think would be good for that price? Would you use anything from your list you made now?

Don't buy a Rosewill PSU when Corsair/Seasonic/PCP&C units of similar capacity are available around the same price.

With a Q6600 DDR2-1000 won't do anything for you over DDR2-800. That changes if you go with a chip like the E8400 or E8500 that tops out at a higher speed.

Why pay that price for a 250GB drive when you can get a very nice (and possible even better peforming) 640GB drive for $5 more?

You said he's already ordered the E8500...has he ordered anything else? And can he cancel his order on the E8500? If he can, I'd drop it down to the E8400 and save $20. Nothing wrong with the E8500...I just don't think it's worth $20 more for 160MHz.

Also, is he cool with rebates? I'll list what I'd get if he uses rebates and if he doesn't use rebates.

CPU: E8400 - $170
RAM: OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 2x2GB DDR2-800 - $70AR. Or get the Corsair 2x2GB DDR2-800 for $87 (or $67AR)
HDD: the 640GB one is good.
GPU: the HD4850 you listed is good.
MB: Roguestar's recommendations is good.
Case: it's mostly preference but for $100, you can get a good case+psu combo. Antec Sonata III + 500W EarthWatts PSU.
PSU: I like the Corsair you listed. Or if you go with the Sonata III, keep the EarthWatts 500w.

All this is definitely within range, with or without rebates.

Sadly he has already ordered everything and it just was shipped. I appreciate the reply but there's not much he can do and he could be able to maybe halt some of the items... but he probably wouldn't even want to. He was psyched about a new computer and I actually had to tempt him out of buying everything off my list from the get-go and wait for some replies on here before we go ahead with the deed.

I realize some of those save a bit of money but oh well, not worth the hassle of recalling the order back, swapping parts again. And who knows... someone else could find an even better rebate or something and then what? Repeat again? :p

He wanted it now (and he's been with a crappy computer for a long time...) so he got it. I'll go over to his house again when the parts arrive and help him build.

I just know my next upgrade I'll be patient though. ;)

Thanks again everyone, this forum is always a pleasure to post on. Informative people and posts, quality all around. DSF, great that you spotted that hard drive for just 5 dollars more, he'll probably want the space.

I'll post back here once he gets the parts and starts the build. Would this be the place to post as well if we need help piecing it together or run into trouble?

Edit: And I'm glad I posted here... he got a much better system then what he could have got from ibuypower or pre-built stuff. I'm glad I talked him out of a Gateway he saw at Fry's, this machine we picked for the same price is so much better...
