new computer problems

I just bought a new computer from ncix.com custom build and full assembled by them

ABIT NF7-S V2
AMD ATHLON XP MOBILE 2500+
SAMSUNG PC3200 512MB RAM
SAPPHIRE RADEON 9800PRO
ANTEC SLK2650-BQE 350 PS

my problem is that my computer keeps shutting down along with a siren. My FSB is at stock 133 x14 but whenever I run Prime95 torture test after awhile my computer shuts down and a sirens come on. I don't think it should be doing this at stock speeds. Could this be my Ram because I ran memtest and there were errors on test 3,4,5, and 6. Would that affect the computer and the shutting down and siren.

Also Im using a different bios d26_k2r6I_319_2T. Would different bios affect this somehow to because this didnt happened till I flashed with some other bios and I dont know where I can get the stock bios.

Yes and yes. Do you have the manual? Does it give you beep codes? Also what is the cpu temp/motherboard temps etc before it shuts down. Make sure the heatsink is on the cpu and you are getting good airflow but the fact memtest is showing errors I wouldn't think would cause the system to shutdown with sirens (sounds more like temperature shutoff temps in the bios exceeded or something)

Yeah... I think... the heatsink is on...seems like its on pretty good. I dont know much about computers or how to build one sure I dont know how the heatsink is supposed to sit on the cpu but it seems right.

I dont think its the temps either because its only at 25-30 degrees and its pretty cold where I am so I dont think thats it. What else could it be? I heard some multipliers dont run really good on this board cant that be it or maybe the bios I flashed?

This thread has the beep codes LINK

Sounds like the overheat code. Download Motherboard Monitor 5, get it HERE and watch your temps. You can use the "sys log" feature (see lower left side of MBM5 main window to choose this option), have it record to a text.doc. After shutdown, go in and look at temps.

Could be BIOS is set to a too low temp for warning and shut down. See this feature in the (1) PC Health and (2) Advanced Chipset Features of the BIOS

If memtest86 shows errors, have ncix.com fix it.

The siren certainly sounds like an overheat issue. Hopefully it's not really overheating and bumping up the shutdown temp in the BIOS will do the trick. Unfortunately I've seen some boards that don't let you max out the temp too much. On one of my PCs I'm running 2500+ (non-mobile) w/ the retail HSF and it's in a warm room (75C). On hot days the CPU will idle around 55C and go as high as 63C under a full load. I've seen some boards that max out at 60C if you enable thermal management. Others I've seen go as high as 80C-85C. Good luck!

I guess my question is why did you do the BIOS upgrade? Was there something necessary provided by a newer BIOS?

I checked the bios for low temp warning and shutdown and its on 75C so thats not it. In the bios it says my temps are 27C so I dont think its an overheating problem. Any other ideas?

When you're looking at the temps in BIOS, thats at idle when it runs cooler. You'll need MBM5 (I linked above) to read temps at load (like running P95. P95 can really make your cpu work, and it sounds like from your OP, that's when the siren starts.

Also you shouldn't be content with the errors/problems in memtest86. I think it's an unrelated problem, but if your under warranty they need to replace the ram.

EDIT: Did you refer to BIOS codes I linked above and confirm it sounds like heat? Also list specs on your PSU, it can cause these beeps too. Here again MBM5 will report the psu data (although not make/model-give us that too )

If the ram's under warranty, as another poster noted, replace it immediately.

However, the errors that you are talking about sound like overheating or a PSU problem - get MBM and post some specs.

It definitely sounds like an overheating issue, especially if you are able to turn the computer on again after a little while. You may want to make sure that the CPU cooling fan isn't being blocked by a cable or anything.

Sounds like the mobo thinks something is overheating or running too far off voltage or a fan alarm is set at too high a speed (rpm) and is shutting down. Check the FAQ and tips on the Abit web site as well as your manual. Also make sure the fan on the CPU has 3 wires and that the fan RPM reading shows up in the BIOS. If the rpm is under 2500 or so, you may need to updated the BIOS or adjust the fan alarm setting - as sometimes they aren't set correctly for the slow 80mm or larger fans that are sometimes used on CPU coolers these days.
. If everything in the BIOS is set correctly and all your fans and the CPU HSF look like they are mounted correctly and all the readings (temp, volt, rpm) are as they should be, I'd call the dealer for advice and/or RMA the mobo.
..bh.

There's the :sun: ! finally...

I agree with everyone else. Sounds pretty typical of heat issues. Especially if it happens after being run through torture tests.

the fan rpm is around 2600rpm and yeah I check the bios beep...its a siren so probably an overheat problem or voltage. Shouldn't be though because my temps are pretty low and the overheat temp shutdown is at 75 degrees so I dont think its that.

I tried using Motherboard monitor but it doesnt say anything or im using it wrong. This thing is confusing. I use CPUcool and it seems the temps are alright. 25-27degres
