new computer not working **NEW PROBLEM**

athlon xp 2600 (barton)
chaintech ct-7njl6 nforce 2 ultra 400 motherboard
corsair value ram 512mb
hitachi 80 gig sata
geforce 4 mx

i've built my own computer (this is for my brother) and assembling it went flawlessly. i'm having a major problem with this though, when i try to turn it in, the fans will go, but after a few seconds everything shuts off, with the power led left blinking. i've tried using memory from my computer, an athlon 1ghz from my old computer, the psu from my old computer, and even a different motherboard that i accidently ordered (i origionally got it thinking that it had sata) anyway, whatever i do, i get the same problem, please help me!
 
Could be thermal diode shutting you down. Heatsink on correctly? Some boards will shut down if they do not detect the cpu fan rotation. Is the cpu fan plugged into the mobo? Does the fan have rpm monitoring wire?
 
no that cant be it, its the retail hsf, its plugged in, it spins with the rest of the fans, and the cpu doesnt have a chance to get hot, so it cant be overheating. besides it had the same problem with the other motherboard.
 
😕 Woah... even with swapping out the motherboard and cpu it still has the problem? That's weird. Maybe your case has a sticky power-on button? Have you tried manually turning on the computer by quickly shorting the two pins that hook up to the case's power on switch?
 
I had the same problem with my build below.
Never really found out what it was.
The fans would spin up for a few seconds, nothing on the screen, and then it would shut down.
I pulled every connector from the MB execpt the power switch. Then I took out the memory and reseated it. I even put them in the other slots, then moved them back. Somehow, it just fixed itself, after a few times the MB came to life.
My memory has the lights, so I could see them light up when it booted correctly.
You know, sometimes my machine won't boot unless the case is completely together. For some reason, that grounds it. With your MB on a static bag, or in an open case, it may not be grounded.
Then I'd check the pins on both MBs and both PSs. In my latest build, a pin on the PS connector was pushed back.
 
Nice of Chaintech to leave a troubleshooting section OUT of their manual. At the end, they say feel free to contact them if you have issues. They do have some support contact info at their site. Since you could not get it to boot on the bag with power only, it was not what I was going to say (use the paper washers.) Also try without memory. You should get a different beep code. I like ASUS because you can plug headphones into the green speaker jack and it will whine to you what is wrong.

crap, i'm such a n00b, it was the hsf on backwards. however, new problem now. everything spins up, however theres no beep, and the screen isnt detecting a connection.
