Mmmm I just upgraded
From:
Dell 8200
Pentium 4 1.9ghz
512mb (2x256) pc800 RDRAM
geforce2 MX 400
5400RPM boot drive

To:
Hand-built
AMD FX-53
1gb (2x512) corsair value select
bfg geforce 6800 ultra
wd 74gb raptor boot drive

I was incredibly lucky in that after I assembled everything, it booted up and everything worked fine. Haven't thoroughly tested components (need to run prime95 overnight and maybe mem86 to be sure) but everything has installed fine thus far. Some preliminary benchies for those who care: 3dmark2001 - 24615 (from 2821 on my old machine) 3dmark2003 - 12487 (didn't even bother running it on my old machine :p).

its look good and stuff buy why corsair value select ?

your using all of the most expensive stuff and you use 2.512 mb corsair value select.

i would go with the super low latency ballistix or something.

Not so much luck as just doing a good job. Congratulations.

I too just installed a BFG 6800 Ultra 2 weeks ago. I ran 3DMark2003, not really caring so much about the score, just wanted to start a loop and stress test the card. My score was like 11800 or so. My cpu is an XP 3000+. I had all kinds of stuff running in the background too...antivirus, firewall, asus probe, Ad-aware, etc. I would expect your score to be much higher than mine considering your cpu is more powerful.

For 2x the price, its been shown that you'll only get maybe 2%-4% performance gain. Timings really don't do much for the Athlon64 memory controller.

On an unrelated note:
BTW I never installed any AMD drivers, do I need to and if so, which ones?

Probably around 2600 (that includes klipsch speakers though) so more like 2250 for the computer itself

The high performance memory is basically a gimick - one that people around here are suckers for :)

Unless you are OCing or something, the value stuff is perfect and a great deal.

perhaps many of the "people around here" happen to be overclocking?

Why? So that he can score an extra 500 points in 3dMark01? LOL. Low latency RAM 'aint all that. Anyone who says they can 'feel' the difference in the usual operations is just trying to soothe their aching wallet.

That's just something poor people say. :)

Most people want good ram so they can oc the fsb. The FX chips are totally unlocked though so it really isn't necessary to have high speed ram since you can always raise the multiplier instead of the fsb. That being said, my corsair value does 225 at 2.5/3/3/6 which ain't bad for what I paid.

Besides, what's the point of getting $200+ sticks of super low latency DDR400 when you can get cheap $100 DDR500 when overclocking? All you need is for the stuff to clock.

It's not just how fast the memory is, but also how fast it responds. The point is, when you combine LL memory for a 4% gain, and then you overclock your video card, and then overclock your CPU, the TOTAL percentage gain is pretty significant. It's all about maximizing performance. When I build a machine, I want to eek as much performance I can out of it. Crucial Ballistix memory sells for $138 per 512MB stick, which isn't bad at all. Certainly not bad enough to discourage me from buying it. :)

Definately with a system like that get some Ballistix. Haven't you guys seen the performance reviews done by AT. Well seems like a bit more than 4% to me. Yes P4 benefits much more but still with a system like that get it some proper memory.

Otherwise nice build.

sweet setup ... but i suspect my 4pc 2.6@3.3, mem timings 2-3-3-7, runs just as fast.
and my pny 6800gt runs at ultra clock speeds.

3dmark01 - only 17k? why so low?
3dmark03 -12K

i love overclocking!!!

Yeah there's nothing wrong at all with the Corsair VS, but come on....he just dropped down several hundred bucks for that FX and can't spend $100 more on some Ballistix? :D

not afaik, though might find one in windowsupdate or something (i vaguely remember seeing something with "AMD" in the wording in the driver bit once). You almost certainly will want the motherboard chipset driver, however.

I think the only drivers there are, are for PowerNow! which you probably don't need and maybe can't even use depending on your hardware.

Yeah, I installed all the drivers that came with my mobo (chipset, ethernet), then sp2, dx9, nvidia drivers for my vid card, and all the other assorted drivers for my other peripherals. Just ran super pi and got 37s for 1m, prolly could get better if I didn't have a bunch of other stuff running at the time (maybe 35?) but still good.
