New computer for multitasking

He uses it for: DVDs and music, web surfing, listening to music, and very little gaming.
The cap is $1000 but less is always better.
I am planning to buy from Monarch Computers. Is this sufficient?

What kind of specs do you need? It looks like an XP 2500+, 512MB PC3200, and maybe something cheapo like a radeon 9500 pro would work. It should work to be about $300 w/ PSU but w/o case.

I agree, I am using a setup just like what E..cow suggests with no problems. However, for a friend, I suggest a Dell 4700 - if you check their site for Outrageous deals you get a P4D 2.8 with a cheapo video card but with an 17" analog FP monitor no dvd burner for about $800 shipped - I doubt Monarch will come close, and Dell not you provides the support for the first year.

you are wasting money, get a dell. and listening to music and surfing is not really multitasking. i doubt he will be doing anything while watching a dvd, so you are spending way too much for a computer that e.Cow recommended.

People always say "very little gaming" until they get a PC that is capable of it. I'd say bear that in mind and spend what his budget allows. Your specs look good though I also say go AMD.

Thanks guys. I will try to convince him to go AMD64 route. One more question: Is there a noticable difference, for example, between AMD 64 3000 and Pentium 4 530J 3.0E LGA775, when it comes to doing things like burning DVDs, listening to music, and browsing the internet all the same time; with antivirus, firewall, anti-spyware, azureus, and emule in the background.
