new computer failings

I have assembled a new computer and everthing seems fine, and at first it ran for 5-10 minutes perfectly. Then it suddenly shut off, and since then it won't turn back on. if i disconnect the PSU cable or shut off the PSU then turn it back on, the lights/fans come on for about 5 seconds then die. The same happens if I disconnect my mobo from the PSU then reconect it, leading e to beleive something might be wrong with my motherboard.

any thoughts?

It sounds like your CPU may be overheating. When you attached the heatsink/fan did you use a VERY THIN coat of a good thermal compound?

Thermal compound is only supposed to fill any pits in the mating surfaces between the CPU and the heatsink. A thicker coating actually impares thermal transfer.

You didn't tell us much about your setup. If you have a newer CPU and some other things, such as a high performance video card, your power supply may be inadequate to power your system. Info, pls.

Good luck. 🙂

Umm, are those fans you're talking, are they powered via the PSU, or do they draw power from the mobo? (are the 3 pin connectors that ahve black and red wires connected to the mother board?)

powered by the mobo

edit - I have a AMD 3200+ processor, a 400 watt rosewill PSU, a 6600gt video card, and a chaintech motherboard.

Ok, try hooking up the fans into the psu and see if they run for more than 5 seconds, if they do than your mobo is fried.

Ok, so I fixed that previous prolbem (added standoffs) and now I have another one >_<.

I was fiddling around with some stuff trying to plug in a new audio thingy and i might have touched a pin with my plyers or something, and now when I turn on my PSU, all my fans and LED's and other stuff attached to the mobo won't power on, but i can't use my power switch to turn on/off power, and I can't boot. Suggestions? the mobo didn't smoke or even smell and since it's conducting electricity i don't think it's fried...

well i'm going to return the motherboard. If it still doesn't work, i'll know it's the PSU (dont think it is).
