New Computer Crash

OK guys. My brand new pc just took a sh!t. I have troubleshooted some basics and am getting nowhere!

Here is what has been happening. From day one (A couple weeks ago this is a fresh build with all brand new hardware) I had weird video problems off and on. Sometimes I would turn the comp on and there would be no display, the screen would stay black. I would reset and it would come right back.

Other times I would boot and it would stick on the Platinum splash screen.

Then one day I booted up and it proceeded to install drivers for "New hardware found" which was supposedly the video card. The same one thats been there all along.

So today was the final crap. My screen is on but frozen. I reset and it comes up to a windows error that it cannot find a specified file in system32. THis is more than likely from my hard reset. SO I run winxp repair and repair this issue.

Then it boots up and again freezes right away and I get a blue screen of death. Just a general one saying check for any new hardware, or bios updates.

So I restart again. This time and from this point on my screen will not even turn on. Black screen no matter what.

I put in another video card I have and same result. Black screen no signal. Both are AGP I have no PCI cards available.

I removed all memory but one stick. no luck. I reset the cmos. No luck.

Guys, I need some help here. This system is not even a couple weeks old. As of right now I am thinking motherboard.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

MY system is:

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
2g PC 3200 Corsair Value Mem 4x512
160g Seagate Barracuda HD IDE
XFX Geforce 6600GT
Athlon64 3200+

No overclocking, no anything custom.

1) What brand and model of power supply do you have

2) What voltage are you giving the RAM

3) Probably a retarded question, but are this guy and this guy hooked up

4) Are you using the MSI auto-overclocking dealiebob, or did you turn that off

5) Are there any PCI cards in the system at all (if so, what are they)

6) How many drives are in there (HDD and optical)

THanks for the reply

1. Ultra Xconnect 500w
2. I have no idea? Everything is set at factory settins in the bios
3. YEs both are connected. ANd on the second video card there is no plug.
4. Again, factory settings in bios other then turning off fast write
5. None.
6. 1 HD the 160g Seagate listed above. ANd a cdrw/dvd sony

Thanks again for any help.

1) yuck. More rice, less meat. *waits for the Ultra X-Connect fanbois to show up*

2) crank the memory voltage to 2.7 volts (BIOS > Cell menu)

3) 😎

4) go to the Cell menu in the BIOS and make sure the Dynamic Overclocking is disabled.

5) ok, no IRQ clashes lurking there, then 🙂

6) ok, so not an exceptional power load at startup, then 🙂

What I would do next, since you can't even get a display, is to try a quality-brand power supply in the 350W+ range and see if she starts now. If so, then that tells you something. Some brands I personally would use are Antec, Enermax and Fortron.

Sounds like a good idea. I have another PSU I can try and will try that tonight immediately. But yes, for the other two ideas I can't do them yet as I have no display.

Thanks again for any help. I appreciate it!

Ok I have now tried it with a different powersupply. A 400w Raidmax. Same result. Power on but screen is black. Again tried with two different video cards.

Can I remove the battery from the motherboard and replace it to get it to reset? Or is this a bad idea? Is it obvious at this point that it is the motherboard?

urgh, now Raidmax 😛 (sorry)

To reset the motherboard's CMOS, unplug the computer from the wall, take out the CMOS battery, move the JBAT1 jumper to pins 2-3 (see p. 2-21 of manual), and eat a sandwich. Now reverse the procedure, other than eating the sandwich, and see if that helped 🙂

Do I I turn the computer on after I put it on pins 2-3? Then turn it off and do the reverse?

Also I just tested with an old motherboard and everything worked as it should. Video displayed, etc. So its definitely something with the motherboard. Hopefully the cmos thing helps, if not do you think its time to RMA the mobo?

No, don't turn the computer on while it's in the Clear position. Put the jumper back onto pins 1 & 2, then put your battery back in, then plug the computer into the wall again.

No luck after this either. I am guessing the board is just dead and am going to contact MSI now for an RMA.

Sucks but thats life. Is there anything else I could try?

If you could get your hands on a good-quality power supply, that might be worth trying. Dodge Viper, premium gasoline. 🙂 Eh?

It certainly could be a failed motherboard, but I would be reluctant to use either of those PSUs long-term for a mid-upper gaming system like you've got there, especially after a mobo failure with those symptoms. I'd retire that X-Connect or RMA it.

If you don't plan on any upgrades soon, then you could grab a 20-pin TruePower430 for $65 right now if you live in the US: link I use one of these in the better of my two systems, which is very similar to yours in overall specs. It plays HalfLife2 'til my eyeballs fall out without skipping a beat, and we all know that's what counts is high Eyeball-FalloutMark2005 scores 😀

24-pin is the new standard, and might be worth it in the long haul. equivalent 24-pin model. It can be used on both 24-pin and 20-pin mobos.

Fortron's Blue Storm might be another one worth looking at, it's got sleeved cables and a 120mm lighted blue LED fan, and Fortron has earned a good reputation.
