New computer can't do anything......

at this point, i'm unsure of the RAM manufacturer. It's so hard to tell for me. with mobo's and HDD's it's so easy to tell. I wish ram was the same way. My roommate is using a 256mb stick of pc2100 (ddr 266 is pc2100, right? it's been a while) that is probably not the same brand since he's using an intel board, and it's known good. How would I slow down the processor/board in order to test it with that stick?

Well, I tried my roommate's ram in all three slots and it consistently gave me a page fault in nonpaged area every time the cd finished loading drivers needed for install and the screen says setup is loading windows (before you get the option to install or repair windows). This would indicate to me that the boards memory slots are bad. Would you agree? If that's the case I need to call abit today for an RMA

known good stick, still blue screen? i'm still leaning toward bad board, but you still cant be sure about the cpu, though ive never heard of the cpu causing this

I have same problem as you mentioned.

My h/w config is

Gigabyte K8NS F4
AMD 64 2800+

Speed 512 MB DDR400
Aopen CDRW 52x32x52
Nvidia GFX 5500
Maxtor ATA133 80G

MB and CPU are new and others are moving from old PC
Are you using same Motherboard ?

Sorry I couldn't be more help to you I have been out of town.

Your board will run fine with pc3200 RAM.
I am running 2 sticks of Kingston HyperX Dual channel pc3200 @ 11-3-2-2.
The NF7-M doesn't "officially" support a 400mhz bus speed, but pc3200 will run fine. You probably wouldn't be able to reach DDR400 using onboard video though.

MechBgone is steering you right suggesting Crucial ram. I only buy name brand sticks anymore since they rarely are much more expensive and are definately more reliable.
Currently I am running Kingston, Corsair, Buffalo, and Crucial on nforce boards without any issues.

I'll probably do crucial next time, but for this computer I've already got a lifetime warranty on the stick I paid for, and it's too late to get a refund, so I'll stick with it. Does crucial carry a lifetime warranty? Also, do you know the answer to my question about the cpu possibly causing blue screens? I know if some of the address pins got switched internally somehow it could, but I've never had a bad processor before, and it's too late to get a refund. OEM processors only come with 30 day warantees. I've seen a few with 60 days, but that's rare

This is a FWIW post...

If the CPU is too hot/overheating, I am pretty sure it can cause stability issues - especially when installing the OS (this seems to be a particularly vulnerable time, which is why it is recommended even if you have a stable overclocked system, don't run it overclocked when installing the OS). However BSOD's related to memory addressing (ala page fault in nonpaged area) I am not as sure about.

I had a problem where every time I booted I got BSOD's related to memory addressing - so I switched the DIMM slots the memory was in and it went away (in fact, I caused the problem by moving the RAM in the first place) - what worked was banks 1 and 2 filled, what didn't was 2 and 3 (or 1 and 3).

Anyway...I've never overclocked a system before, and I'm not about to try it on a system that isn't mine. Also, I'm only using one stick of memory, so the bank issue shouldn't be a problem. Most mobo's now include a little guide in their manual about where you can and cannot place multiple memory modules in the RAM slots. I just really hope the mobo and memory work well together when I get them. I'm pretty under the wire now. So much so that I selected the cross ship choice from abit. We'll see how well that goes.

I wasn't suggesting you are or should overlclock. My point was just that the install is slightly more vulnerable to instability. So if your processor is too hot, that can cause instability that would show up in an install but might not anywhere else. The CPU temp you reported earlier does not seem excessive, I'm just offering the heat issue as an example of how an instable processor can cause blue screens...

Did you ever try a different HDD? With that many errors going I think you might have a bad HDD especially after all those different things you have tried. Just my .02

I already RMA'd the HD once, I don't want to have to do it again...I didn't think a hard drive could cause blue screens like i'm getting on an install...

I borrow another Power Supply to 450 W from 380W but remain receive blue screen
Change Display Card to GFX 5500 from MX440 but remain receive blue screen
Change HDD from another PC which installed XP already but system reboot automatically.
