hey guys, this is my first time ever attempting to build my own pc, always had custom pcs (current one is an abspc ultimate m5 from 2004)

1) my pc will mostly be used for gaming, watching movies & tv shows, listening to music, web surfing, etc.

2) price range? $800 max I'd hope or so.

3) Will be buying parts from USA, most likely newegg.

4) brand preferences: intel, amd, ati, nvidia, wd

5) reusing 17" samsung lcd monitor, keyboard, logitech mx510 mouse, sound blaster audigy 2 sound card hopefully, 2 maxtor 80 gb hds (using VIA sata raid 0 scsi disk device) if not get a new hd - space of hd is not an issue, maybe reuse my cooler master wave master case, and lastly two optical drives - NEC DVD_RW ND-2500A and SONY DVD-ROM DDU1613

6) i have read and searched many threads which makes me feel more unsure if i have the right and compatible parts lol

7) maybe overclock a little in the future but not at the moment

8) hopefully build latest by the end of the month

at first I was thinking of going with an amd build as it is cheaper, but after researching decided on an intel build. so here goes:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 Wolfdale 2.53GHz 3MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor - Retail; currently $129.99 newegg

Motherboard: ASUS P5Q LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail ; currently $129.99 on newegg
I can't seem to agree on a motherboard

GPU: EVGA 512-P3-N801-AR GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail; currently $129.99 after $20 rebate on newegg

PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply 100 - 240 V UL, CE, CB, TUV, FCC, CCC - Retail; currently $89.99 after $20 rebate on newegg

RAM: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail; currently $79.99 on newegg

CASE: COOLER MASTER RC-690-KKN1-GP Black SECC/ ABS ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail; currently $79.99 on newegg
If i don't reuse my current case

DVD-ROM: SAMSUNG Black 22X DVD+R 22X DVD-R 16X DVD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA 22X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe - OEM; currently $30.99 on newegg
Would I be better of reusing my current optical drives?

HD: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM; currently $85.99 on newegg
Would I be better of reusing my current hds? Like I said, space isn't important. I also have two 500 GB WD external hd and one 320 gb iomega external hd

thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated!

GPU change to a HD4850. It performs quite a bit better then the 8800gt for the price difference.

alright thanks. lol yeah i know the 17" monitor sucks. my other monitor is a 19" samsung crt monitor but the desk I'm using doesn't have much space. a new monitor may have to wait but i'll definitely think about that.

I'd get an HD4850 for the GPU. Also, I agree with getting a new 22" monitor. They're pretty cheap now and can be had for about $200
