New computer build wont start up

So this is my second build, built my first computer for myself back about a year ago - and it still runs fast as hell with no problems yet. My brother needed a new computer, so i told him ill build it. Got all the parts yesterday, and put the whole thing together just fine. Everything is connected properly (or so i believe), however, theres a power issue or maybe my mobo is short circuiting. Because when i plugged the PSU into the wall for the first time, it powered up - but only the fan worked. The CPU fan like twitched, and im pretty sure i heard the hard drive and DVD burner start up too. After about 5 secs though, the whole thing shut off. Tried using the power button, and no go from there. So i turned off the PSU, turned it back on, and the power went on to only those parts once again. So i realigned the front panel connecters, reset the CPU, and then tried plugging the power back into the PSU. Same thing as last time, only difference was the CPU fan actually worked for the first 5 secs, then all power went out. But even now the CPU fan wont spin whenever i try to power it back on, and the power button still does ****** for me.

So im at a loss for ideas, i tried to reset the mobo into the mobo tray and not tighten the screws too much - but that didnt do anything either. Any ideas?

ok after trying a few things, still havent had much luck.

I tried testing the whole thing with a new PSU, that wasnt the problem at all.

I did however, disconnect everything but the normal front panel connectors, the vid card, the ram, and the CPU (+hsf), and then only connected the PSU 4 pin and 20pin. (Also by the way, the front panel connector for the power button still does not work, im only plugging the power cord back into the PSU and turning the switch from off to on). I have found that it couldnt be the mobo because the vid card fan spins for about 5 secs, and so does the PSU - the CPU fan still doesnt spin though - but then everything shuts off, so i switch the PSU from on to off. Do you think i have a faulty CPU or mobo or something? Im at a loss here, and i would love to get my brothers computer up and running asap.

Doubt it's a faulty mobo or cpu, those don't happen a lot usually.
If your certain that you installed everything correct (CPU aligned correctly blah blah blah), check for any shorts because that's what it sounds like.
Is your mobo installed with spacers in between the case and mobo etc etc

My friend had the exact same symptom and it was cuz of a short on his MOBO (screwed it directly to the computer case...rofl)

You should have tried it on the bench before assembling it. Try it with the front panel usb disconnected.

ok so i reset everything, the CPU, all the power cables, etc etc

even remounted the mobo - because no i didnt screw it straight into the case. The case has a mobo tray with standoffs, and then the tray slides into place in the case.

however, now when i plug the power cable into the wall, and flip the PSU switch - now theres no power flow at all. now i feel at a complete loss and hopelessness is setting in.

put the mobo on card board and try that way. take it out of the case. and see. What case is it?

using stock HSF on the processor, and using the PSU from the case - i have another PSU that we bought for a different case, but would rather use the PSU already installed.

Ok, it's common for the case fans and whatnot to turn on briefly when you apply power to a power supply (at least that's my experience, half the time it happens, half the time it doesn't). I think your real problem lies with the power switch not working. Check and recheck that you've plugged the 2 pin ATX power switch into the proper 2 pin motherboard connector. If you have, and it isn't working, then pull the connector off, and short the two motherboard pins together with a screwdriver. It's a momentary switch, so you won't have to hold the screwdriver there for more then a second.
