Personally I'd suggest a 2500K/Z68/16GB and see how Skyrim runs with your current GTX280 on that setup. Then if not satisfied go for a higher end GPU (or two). Throw in an SSD for your boot drive to really open things up.

And don't forget to get a good quality PSU, re-using one that old is just asking for problems!

This. A 2500k with enough ram and a GTX280 will boss Skyrim around easily.

And to the person who had an E8400, you have to realize the E8400 is an order of magnitude more powerthan a Pentium D840 3.2ghz, which is essentially two Prescott P4s sandwiched together into one overhot, throttle-prone mess. In modern games the E8400 is probably 3-6x faster than a PD-840.

2500k/z68 pro @ microcenter will be like 330 bucks, you could add a 6970 and an ssd later for under or just at your budget.

2500k, Z68 or P67 Motherboard and keep your 280

That's what I'd do.

Update to the Next generation GPU's in 2012.

Where is this world coming to. Skyrim will run even on a 8800 GT @ 1080p , no AA

grab a 460 1GB save money then buy the new nvidia 6xx.

Seriously tweakboy, do you even read threads before you post in them? Not the first time I've seen you give so called 'advice' that just doesn't make sense. You're telling someone with a GTX280 to buy a 460? Seriously? Give your head a shake

Read some of the replies before you post. Maybe you'll learn something.

They have a microcenter in yonkers and in westbury

Try reading a map.

Best to go with Newegg for the parts. Dropping all the money into an X79 SB-E won't get you as far for the dollar, go with the 2500K/Z68 route.

LOL. Yonkers is 4.5 hours away (on a good traffic day).
