New Computer Build Trouble

I have much experience working with computers and building them has always been a piece of cake, but i never had a problem like this. I"m currently working on my cousin's computer his original parts died in july cause a bad PSU killed almost his entire system, cpu mobo, ram, and psu of course. So i advised him to buy these parts so i can do it.
MSI Nforce 2 k7n2 delta
512 muskin ddr pc3200
mobile barton 2500+
thermaltake trupower 420watt psu

and already owns a 9700 pro
audigy
maxtor hdd

so i have all the components installed and i start to reinstall windows, it restarts. I try again. restarts. and continues. so then i decide to install windows on his hdd on a different comp. works on different comp but doesnt startup on his, as soon as windows xp logo appears it crashes and restarts. i have already updated the mobo BIOS, i'm thinking that the ram is the culprit. any thoughts?

You need to reinstall Windows on the drive while it's in an nForce2-based computer, or preferably the exact computer where it'll be living in. Go in this order:

1) WindowsXP
2) SP2 for WinXP
3) nVidia 5.10 unified driver package
4) video-card drivers

and make sure you don't catch worms along the way. Hope that helps... 🙂

Well i cant even run windows install past the reformat stage... its crashes almost immediately afterwards

Agreed, Creative's cards just arent as good as everyone thinks they are. They've got tons of problems. They've just been around so long that people are used to buying them.

Also raise the memory voltage to 2.7 volts and make sure the 9700 Pro has its power cable plugged into the power supply, and that the ATX12V cable is plugged into the motherboard.

Since you've got a Maxtor in there, go to their site and d/l maxblast 3 (you'll have to create a bootable floppy on another machine since his down). Then use MB3 to reformat (or do a quick LL Format, takes about 2 seconds) and partition. I suspect win XP is gaging on the old chipset drivers in there. MB3 is very very easy to use.
