Hey guys, I will be building a new computer within the next few months - this is key because of the motherboad choices I am looking at.
First of all, I will be going dual athlon MP - with the mpx chipset. I need advice on which motherboard seems the most matured, and which will most likely (conjecture, I know, but it would still help) mature within... a month or so, and will fit the ax-7, with a little modding if needed. And also, I want whoever has a similar setup to check compatability with certain peripherals and attached pci devices.
complete setup so far:
athlon mp 1.6 ghz 1900+ retail x2
Thermalright ax-7 with ys tech 8 cm fan - 48.5 cfm x2
floppy and floppy cable
iwill side du3160 scsi controller (will go in 64 bit/66 Mhz slot)
seagate cheetah x15 36lp 18.35 GB (will be main system disk, possibly dual booted)
promise ultra 133 tx2 controller (will go in second 64 bit/66Mhz slot)
wd1000se 100 GB 8 MB cache x4 (in raid 0, will be used for mass storage and video editing)
All In Wonder Radeon 8500dv ( 64 MB version, denoted by dv, already have this)
generic pci video card (already have this as well)
pioneer dvd-305s, ultra scsi, 10x slot
lite-on 48x12x48x
sony 52x ide cdrom
turle beach santa cruz
ata-100 24 inch rounded cable x4
microsoft office usb keyboard
microsoft intellimouse explorere 3.0
1 GB stick of registered ecc ddr266 (so that i can expand to more easily in the future)
enermax eg651p-ve 550 watt power supply (overkill, I know, but I like the peace of mind for future additions to the system)
lian-li aluminum pc-70usb full tower atx case
Now - I need recommendations on monitors, I would like to get dual 15 inch LCDs, hopefull with the lowest price possible. I will most likely be doing limited gaming, but a fast refresh would still be nice, but nothing too fast is necessary as i won't be gaming too much and probably won't notice the ghosting that much.
I plan on doing video editing, as a hobby at least to start with, using the radeon all in wonder to capture. This is why I want the wd se drives in raid 0, the stuff i work on won't be critical, and i like speed... heh... but i was wondering - i plan on doing software raid in windows 2000 pro. If i dual boot, will the stripe settings and the array be detected in another windows 2000 installation, such as server or advanced server?(i am thinking no, but I like to hope here...) I have already heard of people using the tx2 successfully with this kind of setup, with four drives on two channels - i think the buffers really help in this area as the controller can burst alternately to the hard drives.
I like system responsiveness, and that's why i want a basic scsi setup, with just the x15 36lp as my system hard drive, and an additional dvd-rom. But if i use my burner, will it still slow down the system?(i will probably be burning from the ide array, and not the scsi drive, but would it matter either way?) I know the dual channel scsi is not necessary, but I wanted future expansion with scsi, and also something to fit in the 64 bit/66 Mhz slot.
This brings me to the motherboard. As stated above, I am looking for an mpx motherboard that will accept all the hardware stated above. I am most worried about the scsi controller having conflicts with the motherboard, so I would like to know if anyone uses this controller because I haven't seen too many reviews of this card, and not many people posting on this card (which could be a good thing, i guess...)
Hmmmm, that sounds good for now, what do you guys think?
