howdy all, My workplace imaker.ca has asked me to build a new computer solely for rendering purpose, they will also use it for Maya, Flash MX, Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop, Go live!, etc.

Fast P4 Processor, Nice mobo (Stable~with all bells and whistles: SATA, Firewire, USB 2.0, 800FSB), Good Open GL video card (~$600-1000), Dual channel DDR memory and DVD-RW(4x-8x), etc.

please advise :)

What about a dual processor system??? Either dual xeons with HT or dual opterons???

The dual Xeon would be seen in some apps as 4 logiocal processors and 2 pysical cpus..I imagine that could be formidable...

What OS would be used??

Yeah, you may want to think about a dual processor system if all it will do is rendering.

If single CPU:
P4 3.0C or 3.2C cpu
Intel 875P board
Corsair XMS PC3200 1GB or 2GB, or same thing from Crucial, both are good
I don't know that video card price range very well, sorry

The reason I said an Intel 875P board is because they are among the most stable motherboards out there. They don't have overclocking, memory tuning, etc.

Dual Xeon or Dual Opterons might work better for rendering though.

i'm not sure about Dual processors, also Maya's min. requirements include P3/athlon or up, so i'm looking at P4 3.2Ghz.. any specific mobo advice? Asus P4P800-E or ABIT?

I got the Asus P4P800 Deluxe, I think that is a great motherboard (granted I've only had it a week) but I have had an Asus motherboard in my other PC for much longer...and its only done its job (very well might I add).

Single Cpu

3.2ghz p4c (800fsb)
Asus P4C800

I have the abit and I can say I would rather have the asus....

1 to 2gb of Pc3200 cas 2 (maybe Corsair) in 2 stick combinations only....Dont get 2gb in 4 sticks

I would look at Enermax 430 or Antec 430 power supplies....

I like Antec or Chemming cases (kinda of antec knock offs) I like www.svc.com for these....

I would think about Raptor at least as my main drive and one more 80-120gb drive for storae...Make the 2nd drive an SATA as well...

If you won't be overclocking, get an Intel 875P board which will be very stable for work enviroment
Antec PSU
Corsair XMS 4x 512MB RAM
Pentium 4 3.2C or 3.0C - not a big difference except in price
