New computer ---> any way to salvage installed programs?

I have an external HD that I'm using to house my music and misc. files during the transfer. But what about software? Is there any way for it to be transfered to a new internal HD, so that they run and play as they did on the old computer? Or is this a fool's hope and I actually have to reinstall, update, establish settings, etc. for every single app?

You could image the drive, and restore the image on the new computer, but then you'll be stuck with a bunch of mismatched drives, and BSODs will ensue. Best thing is to start fresh, and reconfigure everything.

If you were just replacing the drive in an existing computer then use IMAGE but if you are planning on moving them to a completely new system they should be reinstalled.

Windows apps install pieces in a number of places. There is real no way to track all of them down and put them into a new windows install.

you could try moving the drive and doing a windows repair (that would be the second promt for repair not the first)....i have done that a few times with no problem....which would get you around the problems with the hardware extraction layer and still have your programs work....
