new computer advice

my cousins recently screwed up their computer and asked if i can build them a new one. they dont do much on it other than chatting and internet browsing, and the occasional gaming. i sometimes use it to play games also.

my question is should i build them a computer with a good amd xp processor or a lower end amd 64 processor? i expect this to last them for about 3 years or so. since i do get on the computer i will need at least a ati 9600 vid card. any suggestions?

Low end Athlon64 3000+ newcastle would be my choice. But the real question is, what is the budget ? That would determine a lot.

oops sorry, i knew i forgot to add something. budget is roughly 600-700 not including the monitor.

Try looking at www.anandtech.com Guides and see if want to do what they would call a Low-End System or a Mid-Range System.

I am using an Asus A7N8X 400 Nforce2 Motherboard and a XP2800+ Retail CPU. Runs pretty good for me. I dont play DoomIII or most new games so it does a pretty good job with just an old Sapphire Radeon 9000. I do sometimes play Halo on it with slightly reduced settings.

heh, that was quick thanks. i guess what i really want to know is, how does the lower end amd64 compare with the higher end amd xp?
