Thank you for your reply, Evan.

Yes I am aware of the fact that both the JBL & the HK speakers are made by the same people. Just like Compaq & HP produce different computers, JBL & HK I believe produce different laptop loudspeakers.

That is why I asked spiderhole whether he could post his opinion on both of them.

Alex

P.S.
I love the JBL speakers on my present, very old Compaq Presario 1800.
I actually bought it instead of the svelter Compaq Presario 1700 at the time, because its speakers sounded far better. [This in spite of the fact that they were both made by JBL]

Does anyone have any info (or rumors?) on whether another verion of the DV1000 may be available by Jan 1 with say a Mobile Radeon processor?

(I have also considered and am considering the Benq Joybook which has a very similar form factor and and a Mobile Radeon 9700, however I like the design of the dv1000 better. I have also considered the larger widescreen HP/Compaqs, however they are too large and heavy for me and my planned uses.)

no news has been heard about that. People ask but no one has said anything. No one has taken one appart yet to see if the formfacor could even hold a diff vid. proc.

Could someone tell me if the remote for the DV1000 works with a PowerPoint presentation?

Anyone heard of new features upcoming (such as better graphics and processor?)

I will be meeting with some HP marketing people next weekend at a Converntion they attend (National Association of Realtors)

Any questions you all want me to explore with them - especially dealing with their corporate systems.

Yes, two:

1) Your question about an option for better graphics (ideally mobile Radeon 9700 w/ at least 64 MB). The form factor is just right for true mobility, but the assumption that people want a notebook to do DVDs only - and presumably another system for full graphics/gaming - is wrong. For some at least, IMHO :)

2) Any chance of making the warranty choices (like next day service) that are available on the business notebooks available for the dv1000 also? For a price of course... Same reason as above - I want this laptop to do both business and essential home computing tasks, would like the option of 1 day service.

Any info (or hints about near term changes) you can obtain would be much appreciated, thanks!

Alex,

both have very good speakers for a laptop, but I'd have to give the edge to the DV1000. They seem to have better overall range, and the upward tilt does seem to project the sound towards you a bit more.

Keep your eyes open for my full dv1000 vs. v2000 review on www.notebookreview.com. should be online by middle of the week.

Ok - so I finally received my fully decked-out dv1000. Everything so far is going great except for two things that HP tech support has been unable to help me with:

1. The memory card reader is refusing to read my MS Duo Pro cards when inserted in the memory card reader with the Duo adapter.

2. All letterbox DVD playback is showing up in windowbox on my screen - black bars on the top, bottom, left and right so that the DVD image when in full screen, is only in the middle of the screen. This happens in WMP 10, WinDVD, and QuickPlay. HP suggested I reset my display resolution to 1024x768 and that kinda worked, but only for DVD playback in Windows, and not for Quickplay. Plus, I have to manually change back to 1280x768 to return the panel to its native resolution. How do we get DVD player applications like WMP 10 and WinDVD to acknowlege that the hp dv1000 has a letterbox display and thus should play the DVD properly?

Thanks for the reply, but the main point of my issue #2 was that all of the bundled DVD player applications assume that the display is 4:3 as are the majority of laptop displays. As such, in full screen mode, it shows the movie on a virtual 4:3 canvas centered on the laptop's 15:9 widescreen panel, thus causing black bars all the way around. It's like watching a letterboxed DVD on a 16:9 TV set, when the DVD player is set to thinking that the connected TV is 4:3 and not 16:9.

So which is better, the Compaq or the HP? For UNLTRA portability. I need a lappy for school: I surf the net, use a lot of powerpoint, AIM, and the rest of the OFFICE suite. What is necessary for this to run smoothly and not wear out in the next 5 years?

Ok Well I have the dv1000. The thing to keep inmind is that these laptops are THE SAME. The differences are that the hp has the non boot up dvd playback and remote while the compaq does not. After that the only real difference is the design. Pick the design you like more. I wish the hp had the black lid that the compaq has.

I have a 1.8ghz with 512 ram. I use it for 802.11 surfing, AIM, and office 2003 with one note. It works great.

I got my hp dv1000 two weeks ago. Everything was fine for a few days. After a week I had to send it back. After 4 hours on the phone with tech support, I figured out the problem myself. It worked fine on battery power but as soon as I used the ac adapter, It froze. I couldn't even press control/alt/delete. I had to hold the power button down to shut it off. I sent it back to hp for repair. They said it would take 4 days door to door. It has been 7 days and I still don't have it back. They billed me though. I hope others have better luck than me.

Regarding the DVD playback issue I mentioned a few days ago.... with a bit more experimentation, I have discovered that movies will play back fine in Quickplay and in WinDVD, but Windows Media Player 10 seems to be locked into 4:3 aspect ratio playback. Even the "Properties" dialog for a playing DVD within WMP 10 says "Aspect Ratio: 16:9, 4:3 playback". Any ideas how to set WMP 10's DVD playback to 16:9?

Anyone else having trouble with their dv1000's memory card reader? I have a PC-Card adapter and that works fine, but the memory cards that work in the PC-Card adapter don't work in the reader on the right side of the system. MS Pro Duo cards in an MS Duo adapter register with the system (blue light, audio alert and the card shows up in Device Manager) but the card doesn't show up in "My Computer." SD cards don't do anything in the slot- no light, nothing in Device Manager, etc.... HP help was, of course, no help.

I have problem about the Ram, I asked HP about the upgrade of RAM,Here is the reply:

I understand that you have a question regarding RAM within our dv1000 notebook series. The RAM inside of this notebook is PC2100 and although it is not recommended to install PC2700 RAM inside of your notebook, it may work but it is not guaranteed to work. It will more than likely still run at PC2100 speed when installed.

So it will be a waste of money to buy PC2700~~Right?
I am not sure whether it is caused by the embedded PC2100 RAM in the laptop, which is installed by HP and could not be removed~~

Anyone has more info?

how's it going, brave beta-testers? ;) i'm still waiting around before i pull the trigger, and anxiously await dell's 14'' wxga challenger. keep up the good posts which are definitely helpful for prospective buyers.

gadgeTT: what screen resolution did you have to set in order to successfully play dvds at 16:9? or is screen res not a factor?

anybody else having problems with the memory card reader?

deejay - I'm still running at the factory rez of 1280x768 and letterbox DVD playback is good (as expected) in WinDVD and QuickPlay, but WMP 10 still forces the display into 4:3 aspect which leaves letterboxed movies with black borders on all four sides.

As for the memory card reader, hp tech support was no help. The drives appear in Device Manager but I just can't get them to work. Since I already have my life installed on this laptop, I'm considering opening it up to ensure that everything is firmly connected inside (am a EE and work for a PC company) so I hopefully won't have to send it in for repair.

The only thing Ive tried in the memory card reader are SM cards and they work fine.

My dv1000 came with pc2700 ram. I added a 512mb pc2700 ram and works fine.

I've had my Presario V2000 for about three weeks now, and I thought I'd share some of my thoughts about the system. First, my specs:

1.6Ghz Dothan
2X256mb pc2700 ram
60gb hard drive
CDRW Drive
Brightview
6 cell battery
... and the rest

First I'd like to talk about the build quality. Overall, the V2000 feels like a solid machine. Although its case is thoroughly composed of plastic, the machine still feels sturdy durable. The black part of the outside case, however, can easily get smudged, which is surprising to me since it is plastic. Also, sometimes I can hear the creaking of plastic when I open or close the LCD, but it's not as bad as the creaking I get from my Dell Inspiron. One of the best features of the system is its fantastic keyboard. While there is a little bit of flexing on the outlying keys, for the most part the keyboard is extremely sturdy, and typing is not a problem at all. My only gripe is that the delete key is placed in the upper right corner, which is a drawback because I frequently use it. The orange and blue lights of the power button, WIFI button, and LCD display on the front of the case contrast nicely with the silver interior. The system is fairly light at around 5.3lbs, which makes it easy for me to slip it into my backpack and carry it around all day.

For daily tasks such as word processing, internet, email, etc. this system performs admirably. However, the hard drive seems to be a little slow, as cutting and pasting large files (>700mb) takes more time than I would like. This is probably due to the fact that I chose the free 4200rpm hard drive. Perhaps it would be wise to invest in a faster one. Since this machine only has an Intel Integrated Graphics Chipset, games are not its greatest strength. But older games such as Warcraft III and Quake III work fine with great framerates. I haven't tried any of the newer games, but I wouldn't expect them to work well. The included CDRW drive is pretty much the standard that you would expect from a laptop.

Battery life is modest at about 3:00 with LCD at half and WIFI on. Turning WIFI off and lowering the brightness of the LCD will increase this to around 4:00.

WIFI works great, and it picks up signals much better than my PCMCIA card ever could.

The Brightview screen is, in my humble opinion, worth the extra 75 dollars. Colors seem much more vivid, and the contrast between black and white is more enhanced. The LCD isn't the greatest though, as it seems to have poor viewing angles, especially vertically. But DVDs still look great, so long as you are the only one watching them.

The speakers are pretty much standard. While they are capable of being loud, they lack a deeper range, resulting in somewhat canned audio. But on the brightside, the headphone jack is placed on the front, so higher fidelity is but a plug away.

Overall, I am quite satisfied with this machine. It is quick for everyday use, and is still capable of providing some entertainment every now and then. Keep in mind though that this definitely isn't a gamer's laptop. In any case, I would give this machine my thumbs up.

Hi man,
You installed PC2700 or it is the original RAM from HP?
Are they running at PC2700(333MHZ)?

THx!

I installed the PC2700 myself, since I later realized that having only 256mb was too slow. As for the clock speed, I'm not sure. Is there some way I can check it?
