Yea I want to know about a sleve. ASAP

My dv1000 is getting all scratched up. The silver on the DV is deffinetly just painted on. It is scratching amazingly fast. Nothing compared to the old TiPowerbook, that thing did not scratch.

Hey all...

I got my dv1000 laptop 2 days ago. It's really nice. The only problem I have with it, and I think this happens with most laptopts, is that hwen I press the mouse pad once it processes this as a mouse click on the screen. It's annyoing when I am typing on IM and then accidently click somehwere and lose focus in the IM windows...I hink you can turn this off but haven't figured out how yet.

In the task bar there is an icon, Synaptics Pointing device. Right click on it and you can disable the tap click. On my dad's $800 Hp lappy I could never figure out how to turn off the tap click. Drove me crazy!

shinza sleeve? link?

keep the reviews coming. i'm slowly taking steps to getting the dv. played with the dv1040 at fry's today and was very impressed. pass on the briteview. now, after having touched it in person, i can buy in comfort.

Mine is too... just a little bit though in one spot, but that is because I had something in my laptop case resting against it. Just be careful and you should be ok. I haven't had any added scratching in over a week.

...as far as deejayshakur saying to pass on the BrightView option...I still disagree. I don't think you can use a store's showroom to properly judge the BrightView screens. There are too many flourescent overhead lights compared to average rooms. Even in my office at work where the room is lit only by flourescent lights the screen is 100% readable with no noticeable reflections as long as I have the screen brightness turned all or most of the way up. Even with it all the way down the reflection isn't that bad. However, to each his own - decide for yourself!

Dude, check out the "second skin" - "9 dot series" G4 powerbook sleeve from Tucano. Grabbed one at Fry's this morning and it is a PERFECT fit.

Ordered a compaq v2000 for my wife (pentium-m 710 and all the basics for $930 before rebate) and it came yesterday.

First of all, can someone suggest a good memory for it? I only got 256mb and it's a bit sluggish.

Now here are my impressions:

1. it's not all silver like in the demo when it first came out. The interior is silver but the exterior is black. They changed the demo sometime ago and I didn't know. bummer.

2. the compaq logo is inverted, unlike the dell latitude I have. meaning when the laptop is open with screen upright, the compaq logo is upright from your perspective if you are sitting across from me. Is this true for everyone else or did they messed up my unit? minor issue but it kinda disturbs me seeing the compaq logo upside-down when i fold down the screen.

3. just read today in the manual that the 6 in 1 card reader does not take compactflash. this is probably the most aggrevating thing about this unit, i should have done more research on this before buying.

4. wife complained that the screen seems kinda fuzzy/cloudy. I'll play with the color setting tonight so see if that can be fixed, but I am regreting not spending the $75 for the bright view or whatever screen.

5. one final minor issue is on the keyboard, the individual letters on the keys are bold, so they kinda jumps out at you. Doesn't feel quite right on a clean silver surface.

These are the things that caught me by surprise. 3 things keeping me from returning it:

1. screen size is just right.

2. very good speakers for a laptop.

3. it's a good price, my wife really wants a Sony VIAO 13" widescreen laptop, but that's doubling what i paid for this.

And I am sure i can do something with the screen color setting.

anybody know if the 5.5pound spec is WITH battery or WITHOUT ?
5.5 is with battery. Without battery the v2000 weigh in at 4.8 on digital scale, in case you wonder.

The logo on my dv1000 is the same way.

it is for others people benefit so they know you have what you have. Apple did this and I never understoof what the big whoop was about

yeah i guess. I am just not used to it, having used dell for almost two years. my ibm and gateway before that all shares the same orientation as dell i think. Or maybe the don't, I didn't really notice it until my wife pointed it out last night, and now i can't stop looking at the logoes on everyone's laptop at work...

I recieved my shinza sleeve today. I got the medium size one. Length wise, it is a perfect fit for my dv1000. But the sleeve is about 1.5-2 inchs too wide so it is a little loose inside it.

Does anyone know if the dv1000 will have an option to customize the graphics card later on in? maybe in December? I would like to buy this notebook right now but I really want something with more Video Memory. any suggestions?

Just to confirm... you bought the 15 inch sleeve right?

Yes, the 15" Powerbook sleeve. Keep in mind they have a more expensive powerbook sleeve, and the "nine dot" series (so named because the nine dots in a square logo). I got the "nine dot", looks and works great!

This laptop looks amazing in every way ... except for the screen. I checked it out in a CUSA today and the screen a) was way too reflective, and b) looked blurry/oily/fuzzy/cloudy, as tempuraki('s wife) noted. So my questions are: do both the Brightview and regular screens have this same glossy, fuzzy look? Is Brightview just brighter, or does it add this extremely reflective surface?

There was a Toshiba widescreen next to this dv1000, and its screen looked amazing next to the dv's: much more readable, much easier on the eyes. I'd be all over a dv1000 or z2000 if I could order one with a "regular," non-glossy LCD. Is this at all possible?

As perfect as these new HP/Compaqs are, the BenQ Joybook 7000 appears to be essentially the same thing, but with a discrete Mobility Radeon 9700. I can't friggin' believe that's not widely available here....

played with the DV1000 in the store yesterday.

After reading through the luvfest of this thread I was somewhat disappointed.

Felt/looked kind of cheap and the screen was only so-so.

Why is everyone so high on this laptop?

Yeah, we went to CUSA yesterday to check out the brightview, and my wife commented again that the color doesn't look as vivid as the other brands.

As for the Brightview, we didn't bring our laptop to do a side by side, but we didn't feel that it is brighter, just the glossy "finish" is different. I think it's just personal preference, really, while I liked the glossy look, my wife thought it's way too reflective.

I got the regular screen too...I'm not a big fan of the briteview finish. Too shiny IMO.

I would like to encorage people who are considering these laptops to look at the two screen options. I think it would go to far to say one is bad. They are different. The difference is between reflective like screen and one that is not.

For my money, I took the briteview.

Something else I find a bit strange is the media volume controls. They seem to control volume in PowerDVD & iTunes...but DON"T affect the main Windows volume level when in other applications. However, the MUTE does work in both. I hope there is a way to change this, since a lot of times I would want quick access to a hw volume control...not just in those apps.

I also constantly use my hw volume control on my present computer.

Did you find a way to use it with other applications?

Or is this a flaw and might need new drivers from hp?

Has anybody else noticed this?

One final note for now...I also ordered a V2000 for my wife which should be here in a week or so. As soon as that arrives I hope to prepare a detailed "head-to-head" comparison of both these units for everyone trying to decide which one to buy.

I look forward to that spiderhole.

I am particularly interested in finding out which of the two systems has the better loudspeakers:

dv1000:Harman Kardon 16-bit Sound Blaster Pro-compatible stereo

OR

V2000:Internal JBL Pro Speakers
