Hey all...

I got my dv1000 laptop 2 days ago. It's really nice. The only problem I have with it, and I think this happens with most laptopts, is that hwen I press the mouse pad once it processes this as a mouse click on the screen. It's annyoing when I am typing on IM and then accidently click somehwere and lose focus in the IM windows...I hink you can turn this off but haven't figured out how yet.

The keyboard is soft keys, not loud at all. I love the keyboard.

I got the 1.5Ghz Pentium-M when they were offering it (right now it seems to be off the list), and I get 3 hours of battery life.

Otherwise, i'm extremely happy with the system - it does what i want it to do. It's not a gaming machine, but I can still do my work on it and travel etc.

Quickplay is cool, but not something i'd call a "plus" for the system, just a little extra thing.

Post your questions if you want me to answer them. i'll be happy to.

Got some questions I was hoping to get some help on:

this is great, this thread is attracting a lotta n00bs.

? Does the DV1000 & Presario models (3000 and V2000) have room/availability for an external DVD writer? I think I read somewhere that the Presario models didn't. Does the V2000 have this?

i think you can pretty much add an external burner to any laptop since it is external--just plug it into the usb port and you're good to go.

? What's a CF bay/drive?

CF = compact flash. do you have a digital camera or pda that uses cf memory? just stick it into the drive and you'll be able to see your data.

i can't comment on the keyboard, but i'd advise you to go into a b&m to test it out.

isn't there big button on top of mouse pad to enable/disable the mousepad

Mine is stuck, too. Fedex says that customs needs additional shipping documents from the shipper, but HP claims all the necessary documents have been provided.

(celeron M 1.4GHz, btw)

Are you satisfied with your new laptop, how does Celeron M 1.4 perform, can you open more applications like 15-20 internet explorers, outlook, media player and not have any slowdown. I want to buy one with Celeron M, but I don't wont to get burned again. I hade hp ze5730 with 2.8 GHz Celeron and 256Mb ram for two months and then i had to sell it, because it was working like my old desktop on 800Mhz or even worse.

What is your configuration?

If you go with free delivery, estimated delivery date is almost always 14 days, and you normally get it in 7 to 10 days. But what happens when you select two day shipping option do you get it then in five days. Did somebody try this shipping method with HP.

I talked to someone at HP. He saw on his computer that the customs documents had not been sent. He said that they are sent electronicly and were sent yesterday morning. He said he can do nothing untill next wendsday when I should see some movement.

HP needs to fix this shipping system!

My system appears to have cleared customs last night - hopefully our "problem" shipment will begin to move quickly now!

Communication between HP and their builder/shipper in China appears to be very poor. The upshot is that if there is a documentation problem with your shipment, HP in the U.S. can't (or won't) do much to help you. You simply have to wait it out.

The shipment FINALLY made it...I received mine this morning.

Does anyone know which notebook sleeve will fit the dv1000 well? I went to BB, CC, OM, and staples today and none of them even had notebook sleeves.

mine is here.

I'll post impressions when I have some.

The 12 cell does not stick out the bottom or I got the wrong battery.

CompUSA has a couple, and Sony sells them for their Vaio notebooks. I have not been able to find any for 14 in widescreens...seems like the ones made for 15 in would probably fit the best. These might leave too much room for the notebook to float around in there though since sleeves don't have the straps like a carrying case do to hold it in place. The sleeve would still keep it safe from minor bumps and bruises, it just wouldn't be very snug. I'm thinking I might just end up going with a regular carrying case just to be on the safe side. Has anyone else had any luck with the notebook sleeves?

Yea it is a HSTNN-IB09 It lasts for just under three hours. It says replace with HP Spare 367759-001. The invoice says it is a 12 cell. It sits flush in the laptop.

The 12-cell part numbers (from my battery): HSTNN-IB10 ...Replace with HP spare: 367760-001

Looks like you did get the wrong battery. I say call and complain. =o) At least get some credit.

While I still want to get a 6-cell for regular use I have gotten very used to the 12-cell. The best part about it is the angle at which is causes the laptop to sit when it's on a table or desk....perfect. No complaints here.

how about when it's on your lap with the 12 cell? comfortable? warmer?

The heat isn't that bad... It sometimes gets slightly warm on the front left side, but it's not so bad that it will burn. It's tolerable heat.

My DV1000 arrived today. VERY NICE looking unit. Size is exactly what I was hoping as far as compromise between portability and functionality. The unit is very attractive both opened and closed, and the keyboard/controls are quite slick looking. The quickplay feature is GREAT, and I'm happy to find mp3s & CDs continue to play even if you close the monitor (the remote still works too).

Brightview - Overall the monitor is VERY crisp, rich and bright. The glossiness might take a little getting used to, but I don't really notice it much after powering on. However, I DO notice what others have mentioned about negative colors when viewing DVDs from an angle. After doing some testing, it appears this happens when you view the monitor from any angle that is BELOW a zero degree vertical plane. If you tilt the monitor to where it is straight up and down, or even angled sligthly towards you at the top the effect goes away. When it's tilted back at all, the inverted colors (especially with blacks) become VERY noticeable...even when looking at it straight on. The effect is there even when NOT watching DVDs, but that's when it's most noticable. I'm going to give it a few days to see how I feel about it...but it's definitely there.

Something else I find a bit strange is the media volume controls. They seem to control volume in PowerDVD & iTunes...but DON"T affect the main Windows volume level when in other applications. However, the MUTE does work in both. I hope there is a way to change this, since a lot of times I would want quick access to a hw volume control...not just in those apps.

For anyone looking for a neoprene sleeve for the dv1000 or v2000, check out the "second skin" - "nine dot series" G4 powerbook sleeve from Tucano. Grabbed one at Fry's this morning and it is a PERFECT fit.

One final note for now...I also ordered a V2000 for my wife which should be here in a week or so. As soon as that arrives I hope to prepare a detailed "head-to-head" comparison of both these units for everyone trying to decide which one to buy.

Dunno if anyone has mentioned this yet, but your local Best Buy should have a DV1000 series notebook on display. Just got 'em in and it is quite beautiful. I don't care what people say, HP makes some good laptops for the money.
