I got my dv1000 yesterday! If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer them. I can also make some pictures available if you'd like.

Here's my config:
- Pentium M 145 (1.8GHz)
- Brightview Widescreen (VERY VERY nice looking)
- 512MB RAM (1x512)
- 80GB Hard Drive
- 4X DVD+R/RW & CD-RW Combo Drive
- Intell 2200 802.11BG & Bluetooth
- 12-Cell Battery (Yes it DOES stick out - BOTH down AND back some, but battery life seems fantastic with it. Still, I think that I'll get a 6-cell to use as my main battery most of the time.)
- Remote Control

In total it came to about $1740 after the $50 mail-in rebate. The $25 e-coupon I entered didn't go through for some reason and since I'm not in college anymore I can't really take advantage of the student discount. That would be nice, but it's all good though - the 12-month no interest financing is a pretty sweet deal in itself.

I'll post some more thoughts on this thing after I have a few days to mess around with it and configure it the way I want it. I will say right now that the QuickPlay feature is pretty cool and works as promised.

what's the case made of? metal, plastic?

I ordered a DV1000 yesterday. 1.7 Dothan, 1GB memory (2 X 512MB), 40 GB HDD (I am putting in my own 60GB 7200 rpm drive), the BRAND NEW 8X DVD +/- RW burner!! (never thought HP would do a dual media burner, let alone one at 8X !!!!), 6 cell and extra 6 cell batteries, remote + earbuds, also the 3 year warranty with ADP. Just under $2,000 with EPP purchase. Delivery estimated by the 14th.

About the same time I will receive an X40, so it will be one ot these two notebooks that I will keep, and the other will go back, probably.
The X40 I ordered has a 1.3 LV Pentium-M, 4 cell battery and NO MEDIA BASE (I didn't like the media base, once you add it on, you have killed the lightweight aspect of the X40)
Anyhow, the X40 model I am getting is 2.7 pounds, so the decision is going to be a hard one!!

It is kind of ironic that I chose between about 50 million notebooks, sent a couple bad ones back, and I am no down to two models, and BOTH OF THEM HAVE SHARED VIDEO MEMORY!!!
Oh, well!!!

Hi...Can someone please tell me if your dv1000 or v2000 gets warm or hot on the left plam rest area? and how loud is the fan? for example, if you are in the library, will other hear the fan when its on?? Thanks.

my dv1000 does get a little warm on the left side but its not bad at all. The fan is very quiet it would be fine in a library setting.

goody, more guinea pigs. yea im a lamer, gonna wait til they work out the bugs on this one. keeping post info that may be helpful to us future buyers.

I have ordered one, but I am not a "guinea pig" as you imply. I am aware enough to know if I have purchased a problematic system within 30 days or less. If it is buggy, then it will go back to HP, I assure you.
Why not just order one, and try it out to your heart's content for a month???
If it does everything you need it to do for 30 days, it may be irrelivent that "issues" are found later.

The one thing that DOES bother me about HP Shopping is as follows:

I DON'T like the fact that they send out the ADP or extended warranties ahead of the system.

This bothers me for several reasons:

1.) There is a signature required for delivery of HP Shopping items, even the warranty must be signed for.

2.) There has been a BIG discrepency over how receipt of the warranty affects your return priviledges. When I returned my zt3000, I was told that the warranty (which came 10 days before the system) had to be returned within 30 days of receipt, even though it was not 30 days from receipt of the notebook.)
3 different CSR's at HP Shopping told me the same thing.
I actually had 2 CSR's tell me that I could return the ADP warranty, and then re-purchase it again!!!!
Crazy???!!!

Now, with the dv1000 purchase, I am told that this is not the case. But...I am told by others that it is the case, so who knows.
The warranty (which is useless without the notebook obviously), can be returned within 30 days of receipt of the notebook.
However, to get this information, 2 CSR's told me the old information, and 2 different "supervisors" disagreed on the policy.

I asked to be shown where on the website this policy is stated, and nobody could find it, because it isn't there.
I finally got an email sent to me by a CSR that said the warranty could be returned within 30 days of the notebook receipt.

QUESTION:
WHY CAN'T HP PUT THE ADP OR EXTENDED WARRANTIES IN THE BOX IN SHANGHAI???
Can it be that difficult to do????

I personally think that they zoom off the ADP/extended warranties to you to lock you into the order, but I am sure that there is some reason/method to the madness.

I am hoping to keep the dv1000, so the return should not be an issue, but, if you are planning to order from HP Shopping, just be aware of this possible discrepency.

Also (second gripe) they charge your credit card the full amount of the order as soon as you place the order, not when the notebook ships.

DV1000 @ CIRCUIT CITY ALERT

I've been holding off purchase of a DV1000 or V2000 until I could actually see/feel one in person. After extensive phone calls to just about every store that carries HP and Compaq in L.A. I finally got confirmation that Circuit City will be getting a pre-configured variant of the DV1000 in stock on Friday. It's called the DV1010US and I've no idea what the standard features or price will be. Doubt I will buy one there, but at least I'll get to see one up close and personal before ordering online.

I got my dv1000 today; this one with 12-cell battery will go back to hp. Anther one with 6 cell just left shanghai china. I called hp 2nd day after I noticed the 12 cell is physically larger than 6cell. They told me they can't change the config after it went throught their system, so i have to return it. what a waste? they waste my time and their shipping fee.

Anyway, I?ll hold this baby till I get the second one. Should be here in another 3 -4 days.

i rest my case. normally, i take full advantage of return periods, but with non-B&M orders i prefer not to. thanks for the info.

and i'll be checking out this bad boy at CC this weekend hopefully. that's another reason why i'm holding out.

For anyone interested, the BrightView option is once again available. I told ya that sales rep was full of BS...lol

The more I use my dv1000 with the more I like it. I'm still not ready to write a full review, but will soon.

Yup you were right.
And I am ready for the splurge now.

Can anyone post the coupon code for the $100 rebate? Seem to remember someone mentioning such a thing in old posts.

Anyone seen one at Circuit City today?

Just called up my local Circuit City Store (Madison, WI).
The store rep. could not give me an exact date.
Told me they were expected within the next two weeks and asked me to keep calling them to find out if they are available.

but fedex tracking says estimated delivery date is Oct 20th.

what does it mean.

I ordered my dv1000 thru Costco two days ago... thought I would take advantage of the 6 month return...
then I discovered this forum and realized I made two mistakes with my configuration... the 12 cell battery ( I HATE the way it looks) and not ordering the briteview,,, which was not available the day I ordered.... last night I re-ordered a machine.... this will be my FIRST laptop..... and I hope that when the Costco CS center opens this morning I can cancel my first order......thanks for all the feedback... what a great forum!

weight specs are usually with the battery but without the ac adapter. with the ac adapter, they refer to it as "travel weight".

Goli - same deal with my order. My dv1000 shipped on Sept. 30 and estimated date of arrival is Oct. 20. I spoke to a (very rude) FedEx rep who said that the date was moved up to Oct. 18, although this isn't showing on my FedEx tracking. I could not get a coherent answer why HP says it's 5-7 day shipping, but FedEx is estimating it will take 15 business days, and neither side will own up to the long shipping time (i spoke to HP to make sure they shipped it as 5-7 days and they said they did). Anyone who has received their dv1000 or v2000 have this problem?

The FedEx estimated deivery date is WAY OVERESTIMATED. My dv1000 shipped from Shanghai on Sept. 29 with an estimated date of October 14. It actually arrived 2 days later on Oct. 1. Just track it on fedex's website and you'll see
