so should be 6 cell?

man, that thing will be sweet with the 12 cell

only a $25 upgrade

I would not count on it.

I bet you get like the 4 hours. I think more cells in an = size battery only means that the battery will last longer as there are more cells to 'wear out'

No matter it is significant, double the dell battery and the HP still competes.

Is there any way to get the Compaq with the remote?

yea i wish too. and the quickplay option. and the two headphone jacks. just give me the dv1000 in white/silver.

i actually configured both dv and v.....prices differ only by $50. its weird cause a cdrw on the HP costs $50. ($100 on the compaq). however, bluetooth costs $50 on the HP, $19 option on the compaq. in the end...prices are very similar.

I ordered the Compaq v2000 .. $1348 (w/o APP) -- had a $100 rebate, though!

Had a R3000z which I returned. Liked the silvery look it had, which is
exactly similar to the V2000.

Should be getting the laptop any moment now.
Will add more details as soon as I get it.

Like many others have said b4, if it just had a dedicated graphics card,
there was no competition for this one.

Sure.

One anomaly (atleast, I think so) I noticed on the HPShopping website.
The 256 X 2 RAM option costs $25 more than 512 X 1 .. weird aint it?

I forgot a $25 coupon that works on HP/Compaq orders.
Called them up the day after I ordered, and they refused to apply the coupon.
So ppl, when ordering use the coupon $25 off $250 - SV2829

Checked the fedex status.. mine shud be coming tmrw :)

the retail prices on these are very, very enticing. can't wait for some more reviews to come out.

as a former Thinkpad owner, i'd like to know how the keyboard compares to IBM's.

BTW, what was the reason you returned your R3000z?

I'd like to know about the keyboard also compared to IBM. Bad keyboard is why I dont want the 700m anymore. Where is fedex dynamic? need a review!

The primary things I want to know about are:
1) color of case
2) keyboard
3) wifi performance
4) how often does the fan run
5) how hot does the bottom get

How did you get that $100 rebate? I only see a $30 one

I got my V2000 today ... and it looks awesome .. the size looks like a cross between a 12' and a 14.1 laptop....

In Windows, everything seemed to work fine.

I installed Fedora Core2 -> everything but the LCD and the wireless card was detected fine...
Have heard that intel has released their wireless card drivers for linux .. have yet to download that and try... if not, there is ndiswrapper, like always :)
I could not get the screen to display at 1280X768 on linux, not yet, atleast.

BTW, the AC adapter is very small ... the one that I had for the 3000z was like a brick :)

Oh, and abt why I returned the 3000z, it was coz I thought I could manage the bulkiness of a laptop, but when the 30day period was nearing, I felt
returning it and thinking/waiting for some time wud be the best option. If it was a 14' one with the weight being around 7 pounds, wud have kept it.

The $100 rebate was/is availabe to ppl who bought the laptop before Sep 1 .

I havent tried any games as such, am not a gaming freak ,anyway ..so cant comment on the video card, though must say tat a dedicated graphics card wud have been a bonus..

Sound from the JBL pro speakers is very good. I just cant believe the dell ones sound so bad.

More when I discover *more* things...

fedex is the courier company :)

The primary things I want to know about are:
1) color of case
>> black top/bottom and silver sides
2) keyboard -
>> feels like a regular keyboard ..have typed on the 300z which had a similar one and its pretty good , i wud reckon ..dunno abt the thinkpads ..but one thing for sure, it has the windoze key at the right place , unlike the TP's :)
3) wifi performance
>> very good .. i went out quite a distance out of the house and it seemed to detect my network like a charm ..
4) how often does the fan run
>> hmm ... i wud have to say not too often .. infact when I first put my hand towards the fan, it was off, and I thought something was screwed up :)
5) how hot does the bottom get
>> kept it on like for 3-4 hours on ac power ..updating windows and then installing core2 ... didnt get all that hot...havent run it on battery, still

REVIEW ! hmmm,,, I dunno ..am not into these thingzzz... have a few photos .which I might upload ..

So, is it like other Compaqs in that it uses a Broadcom chipset?
They tend to do very well I think, esp with a Broadcom based access point/router (like Linksys).

I used a Compaq 3077WM with a Linksys WRT54GS and it was great. 54mb most of the time, even going upto 75' away. I could easily go a couple floors up or put the router in the house and be out in the garage (12' from house) and be about 50' away with those couple outside walls between and still get solid 54mb connections. I imagine the other Compaqs with the same chipset would be simular.

thanks for the initial thought, dynamic. personally, the color of the dv1000 is growing on me. plus all the extra features...hard to beat.

hey deejayshakur .. you shud probably check out a r3000z if you cant find a V2000 .. if you liked the silver look of that thing, you wud like the v2000 too.
the xtra features of the dv1000 like the dvd play w/o the OS is really cool ..

NordicNINE: its a centrino ...so no broadcom and their sick policy to deal with :) ... its intel's chipset ..
I downloaded the wireless card drivers and it works smoothly/easily even on Linux ...

dynamic: nah, r3000z is too huge for me. i would carry it to work everyday and 8lbs+ is pretty noticeable. but it does have nice specs.

btw, what warranty did you get? my friend has an x1000 and recommended i buy the longest one i could afford since laptops are not as easy to fix as desktops. i'm thinking 2 years for $99 should suffice.

just got back from borders. Laptop Magazine for October has a two page review. The major cons were GPU and apparently some of the decals on the machine make it look bussy.

The poor performance of the GPU is not surprising! Obviously you cant expect to play Doom3 on this puppy..
BTW, I had roommates use the laptop for a while today .. the battery seems to last around 4hours when basically surfing
the web and some intermittent music was playing. I cant take it to school coz I dont have a backpack yet.

EvanAdams: what are "decals" ? and what is busssy?

deejayshakur:
I got the basic warranty .. (1 year) I thot if it aint breaking for one year, it wont later too. But thats just me, as a student
BTW, I shud be getting some extra discount on the thingy what with APP working now :)

I still dont find the v2000 review of laptopmag on their website ..
The Dv1000's is
