My buddy is starting an investment and development company and needs a logo created for it. Anyone here know of good sites or good people to do that kind of work?

You get what you pay for with this stuff. A decent logo might be simple, but it takes a lot of knowhow to make an effective one. Don't think you're going to get anything good for $500.

I despise 99designs. That site, while good for the employers, is horrible for graphic designers such as myself. It's a clusterfuck of good and bad designs, and there are regularly 100+ designs for a single project.
 
I've also done a few logos and identity materials myself... check out my website in my sig. Maybe your buddy wants to hire me? 😛
