Just built my new system using a P5B-E motherboard which has the Attansic Gigabyte Lan.
My old computer has no problems connecting to the Linksys BEFSR41b router and obtaining an IP from it.
However the new pc's connection 'flickers' on and off every second.

the system event log shows:

The system detected that network adapter \DEVICE\TCPIP_{FA43F2F9-C43A-4784-9032-6EA3CCE76196} was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter.

Shows the above message three times in a row (in a span of 3 seconds) and then:

Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0018F375F57C. The following error occurred:
The operation was canceled by the user. . Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

It then repeats the connected log again. This goes on constantly.

I have updated the firmware on the router and reset it. Made sure I was using the latest drivers from the ASUS website (which are beta for xp go figure) as well as tried fiddling with the meda type for the adapter. No change at all.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Hi Jack,

The tcp/ip properties were all set properly. Not sure about the winsock items but I did run the check and it said it was ok. I should have mentioned, if I bypass the router and go directly to the cable modem I get an ip just fine. But I need to go through the router so both pc's are connected.

thanks

Have you tried resetting the router back to its default configuration? I just wired up a new P5B-E motherboard (to a Linksys Draft-N) with no problems.

I tried resetting the router with no luck.

Took a step backwards now as I cannot connect to the cable modem anymore. Get the same problem. Updated the bios drivers and tried different cables all with no luck. I'm starting to think the lan adapter on the motherboard is faulty.
