New Comp. Parts - Not Working

so i bought a new motherboard, cpu, and ram to add to my 6600gt and 80gb hard drive i currently already use.

mobo - ASUS P5N-E SLI

cpu - Xeon 3040

ram - Transcend JetRam 1gb ddr2 800MHz (JM388Q643A-8)

killdisked the drive, installed all the new parts...when to start it up, and it just "turns-over"then goes dead...


anyone got any suggestions...? i have a random guess of an idea but i want to hear others responses before i say it so i dont influence anything...

thanks for any help....
 
Well, if its not giving you beeping errors, it most likely is your PSU. What brand is the PSU? It might not be supplying enough amps
 
Well, its one of two things, your CPU is a lemon or your PSU is a lemon. Since, (based on my use of Asus mobos) Anything else would cause a beeping error from the system instead of turning over and shutting down.

I also use a modular 620w. (I used 500w before), so I can tell you that your system is most likely getting enough juice, and its not that its lacking power.
 
Actually, forgot one more thing, it also could be your motherboard itself. So check your use another cpu on the system too, if it still doesn't turn on, then it leaves only PSU & Motherboard. (I am assuming you have another system), so install your PSU on the other system, and see if it powers up the other system, if it does, it only leaves your motherboard, if it doesn't, then its your PSU.
 
ok well i tried powering on with the P4 but it didnt even "twitch" just completely dead.... does my mobo even support this P4 even though its the same socket?

anyways...assuming the cpu would work...it leaves the motherboard....

but ive also heard that theres a lot of problems about how ddr2 isnt always compatable with all motherboards etc....could that be the problem?
 
The only thing DDR2 isn't backwards compatible with is DDR, so even if you have DDR2/533 it should work. If its the same type of socket, I would assume it works, but I'm not too sure about the motherboard, you might want to check the specs in your manual
 
Well, your PSU is probably fine then. Most likely its your CPU or motherboard that is faltering. IMHO, motherboard is more likely than CPU

Edit: I went over the specs of your motherboard:
LGA775 Socket:

Intel® Quad-Core/Core Extreme/Pentium D/Pentium 4/Celeron CPU processors
Compatible with Intel® 06/05A/05B processors Intel® EIST/EM64T/Hyper-Threading Technology/C1E/ TM1/TM2.

So if your older CPU is also not powering on, then its probably your mobo thats at fault.

Also, just to check, your RAM is non-ECC right?
 
Have you tried putting the motherboard on a piece of cardboard on a table and hooking everything up OUTSIDE the case?

Do this before you condemn that board, the board could be shorting out against the risers in the case.

If you don't fancy bridging two connectors on the PSU, leave that in the case, lay the case on the table too and hook up the PSU wires to the board, while the board is out of the case and on the table. There's usually enough cable. It's easily done and means you can power it on using the switch on the case.

Try that and come back. Because what you're describing, i.e. a very brief powering on and then going off, sounds like it *could* be a shorting issue.

Doing the above will tell you if you haven't already tried it.
 
Then as said above, appears your mobo may well be DOA.

And yes, most places should exchange if you tell them what you've tried. Perhaps time to try your luck with another of the same board.

Edit: Have you cleared CMOS with the jumper? I notice that wasn't mentioned above. It has been known that boards wouldn't start until this has been done. Worth a punt.
 
yeah i emailed them and stuff...i asked if i could go to the san francisco store which is somewhat close to me to just pick it up in person...they said ok. they said like they will swap just the motherboard but let me keep all my opened "accessories" (IDE cables, sli connector, etc) or whatever....seems fine...all i need is the mobo anyways.... what do you think?

thats fine. you basically just get an additional set of extras/cables/accessories.
