I'm putting together a new computer for a friend and I've been looking around forums and reviews. I was originally going to go with the following setup for him:

Barton 2500+
Asus A7N8X-X
WD 80GB 8MB cache ATA
Maxtor 40GB 2MB cache (from existing computer)
Radeon 9600 Pro
512MB PC3200
LiteOn DVD/CDRW
Antec True330

But now I'm thinking if I should either get a mobo that supports SATA so later on he can put one in there or if I should just go straight and get a SATA drive and stick it in there w/ a diff mobo also. Thoughts? Are they really that much faster? I see a lot of companies like falcon, polywell, alienware using SATA drives and a lot of you here also...suggestions and thoughts would be good!

No need to. If he feels the need then he can upgrade "later" by getting a SATA Raid card, or upgrading the mobo, in general.

unless the board has native sata (not just a 3rd party chip) it will be a pain to do an install of windows w/o a floppy drive. that and it's not worth it unless you're strapped for ide channels... or you're buying him a new raptor :)

Buy for today. Don't buy for later. SATA drives are more expensive, they cost more, and in the case of the Seagate, they're louder.

Ok forget the sata then :). Thanks guys. Do you think the A7N8X-X is a good motherboard? The 2500+ should be an alright cpu too right?

I just put together a new system myself using similar hardware to what you have listed. I went SATA and a deluxe board. I love the speed (raptor + 120 GB drive).

The 2500+ is a great cpu. Mine overclocked to 3200+ speeds at 1.70 V (from 1.60 stock) with absolutely no problems at all.

I wish people had told me that damn it... stupid drive makes noise and its annoying as hell. The last one I had from them was silent as a dog whistle.

silverpig, is that a rapter plus an additional 120gig drive? So if that is true I'm guessing your raptor is your OS drive and programs etc...

You would want to upgrade the motherboard then later because if you went with a card you would have a bottleneck in the pci bus at its slow 66mhz wich is slower then even pata drives.
