Going to build new system, Getting the following and I am requesting some suggestions for items listed:

Buying
Price (including shipping)
Case: Lian Li PC7 122
CPU : Athlon XP 1800 1.53ghz 111
MOBO: Abit VIA KT266A KR7A 80
Soundcard: ? (I want one that is stable and will work with my setup) please suggest one.
PSU: ? I want one with enough power and not too loud.
Have
RAM: 1 stick PC2100 DDR 256mb already got it from old system
Video: Geforce 2 pro 64mb (will upgrade when doom 3 comes out 🙂
Spkrs: Klipsch 2.1

How is the stability with my mobo/proc combination, I do not want to fool around with an unstable board such as my last system (tbird 1.4ghz) , I want a rock solid system this time, was tempted to get Pentium 4 for the stability but the price scaired me again.

Also my soundcard caused some crashing on my last system, it was a Soundblaster Live! Value.. this time i want a good soundcard that wont cause such conflicts.

Powersupply, i would like to be good and have not be extremly loud.

Side note: The cpu i'm buying is retail and comes with Heat sink/fan ... Do any of you know if those are any good/quiet.. is it true that the Athlon Xp's don't heat up as much as the t-birds did..

Please let me know what you guys think, I'm open to all suggestions and I appreciate your input.

Get a Santa Cruz. Not that there's anything overly wrong with the Audigy, but Creative has never made products that play well with others. The TB does what it's supposed to well...without any worry of it driving the PCI bus to saturation.

😛

Ok well I think I changed my mind, I'd rather go with a P4 so I can have a quiet system, I'd really enjoy a quiet system much more.... What do you guys recommend i get for a Motherboard, prolly get a 1.8 p4 or something.. don't want to venture into the pricey 2 gigahertz

Um...if you want to get an Alpha 8045, I think the AX7 is much better. It keeps my CPU 6ºC lower than the 8045 with the same L1A fan, it's a tad smaller, and it's usually cheaper 🙂

is the AX7 as quiet as the alpha pal8045U?
and what's the difference between the pal8045U and the pal8045T they have at newegg?
and can i use the SVC 80x25mm 35.2CFM 4-pin fan with the ax7?

The retail Athlon XP is quiet. I am using a XP 1900+\MSI Pro2 (KT255A) with a sound blaster live card and I am not experiencing any instability.

Athlon systems don't have to be noisy, some people just enjoy making them that way. Get a retail boxed Athlon XP 1800. The cooler that comes with them works well and is quiet.

I suggest an nforce based motherboard of the 415 variety since you already have video. MSI, ASUS & ABIT all do 415 based boards. Leadtek may have one also. The only things to keep in mind with nforce are that you need good quality memory. nVidia has a list of tested modules here The AGP slot is 1.5V only. That won't be a problem with your card.

for sound, use the nforce builtin audio, a hercules fortissimo II, or the Santa Cruz.

There are a few power supply threads already on the forum. Basically goto the AMD website and ensure what you want is on the reccomended list. Don't get a codegen unit though (I don't know what monkey added that to the list, but a quality supply it is not).
