Get it here. Use a 10% off coupon that you got elsewhere. $98.99 - 10% discount + $14 shipping (for me -- YMMV on shipping) = $103.09.

No, not really. Just one of the latest fads.Check the price of a sheet at your local hardware store, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. Probably less than $15 for a pretty big sheet. True, they look really cool with a couple of lights & all, but I don't do mushrooms......anymore. LOL, jus kidding.

The plastic is not very expensive, but a lot more than sheet metal. The plastic is a real b@tch to work with. It clogs cutting heads. It is popular. So... cases made of clear plastic are expensive.

This looks to be the same as I got from Xoxide during Xhour a while back (and cheaper too, particularly with the coupon)

Pros:
Looks sweet as hell, particularly with cathodes, etc.
Reasonably sturdy
Reasonably easy to put together

Cons:
(small) it obviously picks up fingerprints easily (pair of white gloves was included), I wouldn't recommend it for people that need to constantly pop open their boxes to swap stuff, change jumpers, etc.
It is not as easy to disassemble as a steel or aluminum case -- it's held together basically at the corners by screws, rather than everything interlocking
Almost forgot: Acrylic provides little to no shielding. RF and other waves are gonna get in and out. Not a big deal, unless you have the computer next to the tv or you live next to a radio station/ham radio operator, but something to keep in mind (For instance, I've found that it causes problems with my MX700 mouse if i put the base station on top of the case.)

Acrylic (plexiglass) gets progressively more expensive as the thickness increases. The cheap stuff that HD/Lowes sells is not thick enough to make a case. It will sag. You would need at least 3/8" thick acrylic to be strong enough and that's about where it gets more expensive. Anyone in the aquarium hobby knows how pricey it can get to go acrylic.

This isn't meant to be a thread crap, but I posted before in another thread on acrylic cases this question:
What about static electricity? Any metal case will prevent the build up, but while teaching about static electricity in physics class, I use acrylic strips for the kids to generate static electricity... (rubbing with cloth, wool, fur, etc).

one reason plexi is so expensive is that the plexi is expensive, when your working with 1/4" and up, its spendy. second is its very labor intensive. you don't srew the pieces together, but rather "glue" them together. its a chemical that will melt the plexi, you stick together, when the plexi "drys", its bonded. very easy to mess up. honestly, i'm surpised they are so cheap. do the same thing for a sub box for a car, even a simple one for a 12" sub is gonna be the cheapest, 150ish (yes, it takes thicker plexi and stands up to more preasure, but these cases are lot more intracit). <shrug> i like the brushed silver ones best. :)

you don't really glue, you actually bond acrylic. you can use methylene chloride (IUPAC name dichloromethane, chemically CH2Cl2) to bond it: hold the pieces together, pipet small amounts of methylene chloride (hamilton syringe works best), allow capillary force to draw fluid into crack, and hold in place for 5 min. i tried to do a case of 1/8" acrylic and it was too thin. 1/4" would be excellent. 1/2" would be even better and it would have the side effect of being shielded from beta-emission radiation.

side note: chloroform (IUPAC trichloromethane, CHCl3) also works but melts the acrylic too quickly--i preferred worked with the methylene chloride.

They should make a new rule for this forum:

If you post a hot deal you MUST provide a link (for the lazy)!!
