New cheap/quality parts

The last time I built a system was about 4 years ago, so I'm way outdated (PII 450MHz, Iwill mobo)

It's finally starting to run to slow for me, but I plan on keeping the case, vid card, zip drive, cd burner, etc. So all I really need are the following:

  • mobo & fan
  • processor
  • RAM
  • maybe new vid card, probably not (currently Voodoo II)

So I was looking at some of the Athlon XP's on newegg in the price range of about $55 - $75, so XP 1700, 1800, 1900. Any major differences between these? Good fans? And if I decide to go with one of those, I want 512MB ram but I don't really know the difference between DDR and PC2100 and PC2700, etc. nor do I know what the best motherboard would be for such a setup. I spent the last hour reading various reviews but there are so many out there with way more info than I care for, I'm hoping I can just get some quick tips from you guys :) I really only want to spend about $200 - $250.

Thanks,

David

If you care to play any games, upgrade the Voodoo II immediately! Also, what is your power supply rated for? For mobo/proc/mem, get a motherboard bundle from MWave, cheap and they assemble it for you!

AthlonXP 1700+ TbredB @ 2600+ - $55
Thermalright SK-7 with quad led fan 2500RPM - $23
FIC AU11 $85
512MB Crucial PC2700 - $65

total - $225

the mobo comes with soundstorm audio.. very high quality soundcard, and NIC, and it's an excellent overclocker

At that pricepoint, I'd use an Asus A7V266VM-AA, an XP1700, two 256 sticks of pc2100, and one of the sub-$15 quiet hsf's from svc. You may need a new psu, depending, the 300w Sparkle from newegg will do the job just fine.

Go with the onboard video, it's better than your V2, onboard sound's not bad, either...

This assumes that you have an ATX (Not AT) case and psu....

I have a 300W Enlight Power Supply, I don't really know what all the other numbers on the PS mean. There is +5V +3.3V 25A 20A and a bunch of others. I don't really do any gaming, but if I do get a new vid card what's the best/cheapest out there right now? Is MWave a website store? And what would be a good combo to order?

I've picked out an XP1700 for $57, a stick of KINGSTON KVR333X64C25/512MB for $59, and now I need a mobo. Will that memory work with an XP1700?

Is that Asus A7N266-VM AA a good one, with Nvidia chipset? weren't there some issuuse with Nvidia chipset?

here is what i reccommend. stuff at www.newegg.com
Athlon XP 1700, you can over clock it to at least 1900 levels. (what i am doing now) price 56
Asus A7N266-VM , nforce1 chipset with a built in geforce2, it has a agp slot for future card. price 69.99
Crucial Micron 512MB pc2100 stick price 69.00
HUGE bottleneck on the IGP, but a TI4200 will cost you about 100 bucks more.
total 194.99 with free fedex shipping.
oh yeh, pick up a fan too. my athlon gets pretty hot.

I like all that onboard stuff, I think I'll go with the Asus mobo (my sound card is one of those really long slots from before PCI :)).

Just to get a final opinion on the compatibility here, I have

KINGSTON KVR333X64C25/512 512MB 32x64 PC2700 DDR RAM
Asus A7N266-VM AA
AMD Athlon 1700+/266 FSB XP Processor CPU- OEM Athlon XP 1700+/ 1.47GHz

Sound ok?

Your 300w Enlight should be adequate. Use the opportunity of having the system apart to blow it out with canned air... your only issues might be waking from some low power states if the 5volt standby (5vsb) is rated at less than 2A. Definitely worth a try.

Never energize an AMD cpu without having a heatsink installed. Always use some kind of thermal interface material- paste or pad. hold the sink squarely on the cpu when engaging the clip, keep it flat, don't let it rock or put the pressure unevenly on one edge or corner... make sure it's on with the clip pushing on the center of the die, and with the relieved area of the sink above the socket shelf- you'll see when you get there...

Buy something quiet, many of the modern amd hsf's are noisy as hell...

Good price on the pc2700 memory, it should be able to run the fastest timings at pc2100 speed, no sweat.

Does that mean it won't work? Or it won't be fully utilized? b/c it is cheaper than the PC2100.

PC2700 will work, check new egg to make sure, it is in the item description of the motherboard about what type of ram it takes. but it would be like pc2100 ram becuase of FSB limitations of the CPU.

OK, well thanks for all the tips! I have one more question, and then I'm going to place my order. There are two Athlon XP1700's available, 1 is a Palomino core and the other says XP Thoroughbred. The Palomino is $1 more, not that that matters but which one is better?

Thouroughbred is newer and cooler than the palomino's. Also, if I remember correctly, newegg's retail CPU prices were only about $10-15 more than the OEM and you get a 3-year warranty (instead of 1) and a heatsink/fan. The AMD retail hs/fan should be fine for a thouroughbred. It wasn't sufficient for the older XP's but like I said, the newer ones run cooler.

dont worry about the warrenty if you OC. they have tools that tell if you have done it and your warrenty is gone. the thouroughbred will over clock higher than the palomino since the thouroughbred is on a .13 micron core and the palomino is .18 (me thinks). Try to get a thouroughbred B. the Bs OC better than the A but not that it matters with that IGP. they can be identified by model numbers, first few digits
