I've been shopping for home theater speakers and came across this new set. The reviews I found look good. I just wanted to post this in case anyone is looking for this sort of thing right now since they're new.

The thing that sounds best to me is that they do a good job on music and movies.

It looks like they can be found for around $600, which is much lower than the MSRP of $1000.00.

I don't know if I'd buy that set. The crossover frequency is fairly high between the sub and speakers at 150 Hz. That's set almost an octave higher than THX specification.

If you set a receiver's lowpass filter at the THX spec of 80Hz, then you'd get a gap in your sound system.

The main speakers seem small. How large is the room?

I think Cerwin Vega in general doesn't have the best reputation with people who know speakers. Not Bose bad, but typically you can do better for the price. I think they're the one that their older stuff is considered to be party speakers, not terribly great detail or accuracy but they don't distort even at high volume.

Also, I would pretty much never buy something based on a Cnet review, as they oftentimes don't really test things properly (just glancing through this review they seem to make more of pointing out the looks of these and other pointless info than how they actually sound).

Looking at the specs on the Cerwin Vega website these aren't terribly impressive, only 28hz to 22khz and no telling how detailed it actually is or how likely you are to actually get that 28hz from the sub in a typical room. Also, the high recommended passover frequency does suggest the speakers are probably lacking and they're trying to cover it up with the sub (which is a no-no).

Lastly factor in that this is apparently a fairly new product with an MSRP of $999, but its already being sold for about $650 despite the brand name.

The worst part is that the satellites have a built in 150 Hz high pass filter...even if they could go a bit lower...that kills that possibility

It's pretty easy to jump out a capacitor. ;)

Haha, well WE know that....but the average consumer doesn't even know how to hook up a VCR.
