new centrino chipset

do you need a laptop now? then no. if you don't need one for a while thne yes..

Buying a laptop is different than desktops. Desktops you can wait on if you have something fast already. If you wait for the new stuff to come out you can get the older stuff cheaper. If you need a laptop though, you are probably buying it for a purpose. If it's for school in the fall then wait. If it's for work.. buy it now if you need it. If you just want one, then don't buy one and upgrade your desktop. Dothan probably won't be out in force til christmas. It may perform better than current pentium -m's because of more cache, but it will probably consume more power too.

word on endian.net is that dothans will run longer too... guess the new mobo chipset and improved speedstepping algorithms have to do with it.

plus, i heard that the current 855 chipset isn't fully compitable with dx 9.0 ( eventhough the m60 use a dx 9 v-card). This is a big issue , if i were to use longhorn.

i'm a bit suspicious of that rumor since it seems to have started on the sager forums... note how sager doesn't offer banias based products heheheh

Dothan is real. Anandtech discussed it in the closing of their initial Centrino/Pentium-M review. See here. Keep in mind you can't play the waiting game forever. I have been holding out for the Radeon 9600M for a while now on my notebook for college. I'm starting to regret I didn't take advantage of the stackable 15% off promo that ran back mid-June on Dells. There's a fine line between being a smart consumer that researches and makes informed decisions and someone who is indefinitely waiting for the next best thing--make sure you figure out where that line is for you before you become the latter.

bro, that is sooo true...!

I personally think this, right now, is the best time to buy. I've decided Im not gonna cater for long horn, so dun need the state of the art graphics board, etc. Longhorn is coming out in (earliest) 2005. That gives us round 2.5 yrs to play with. And chances are, things won't go to plan and they'll delay it till god knows when (afterall, they are developing things that are pretty complex sounding). So my plan is. Get a laptop now (b4 its too late). Use it for 'bout 3 yrs (even if longhorn comes out after 2.5 yrs, i'd prolly wait 1/2 a yr for them to fix all their major bugs). Dump it. Move on. 🙂

And Intel is alwayz gonna come out with something man. Now its Dothan, then Aothan, Bothan, Cothan, Eothan, Fothan...n lets face it, they'll all be better than the previous. No matter what and when u buy, in 6 months time YOU ARE gonna say "Damn, shouldda waited..". So yeah...take the dive dude.

well, I will be getting a laptop around august 23rd, (what brand , i haven't decided yet). but it is always good to have a general perspecitve of the future.

btw, i heard costco let u return their laptop within six month, no question asked? ! tru...?

I hate to go off topic -- but since the original question's been answered I thought I'd go ahead. Where are you guys headed to school this fall? What are you studying? I'm going to Purdue--going to be a Computer Technology (Telecom and Networking track) major and am going to minor (actually going to take extra classes and go ahead and get the A.S. in minor) in management/business.

So inother word theres no reason to expect the Radeon 9600m in a Centrino Laptop in the near future. At least not till Christmas.

Nice. [/sarcasm]

Bloodstein, MikeD2k3 - I was referring to the dx9 incompatibility, not dothan... it just doesn't make sense esp since the m60 seems to be working just fine.

MikeD2k3 - I am going to Dartmouth and I'm going to be a... uh... I dunno yet. Probably chem/chem engineering....
