New Case for my Asus p4sd-La from HP

I have one of the HP built mobo's from HP. I looked everywhere for some sort of in depth manual. My machine was the a250n Pavillion. Getting ready for next gen (pci express as an example) so I got a new case, PS and an Audigy2 from an Adudigy1. Truthfully I should get a nonpropietory mobo but I have some time left on this one before I have to upgrade. My problem is that the new case doesn't use one connector for USB or Firewire. They use separate pins for each item!!!! I figured the USB out from a google search. The Firewire is a whole separate deal though. The front firewire has seven connectors, ground, VP, VG, TBA+, TBA-, TBB+, TBB- and it has a pincushion of five across and four underneath with the fifth position empty. I have no idea how to plug in the pins.

Another item is the hpanel. H.D.D. LED, Reset SW & Power SW. I have three items to plug in there. The pincushion is four pins above and five pins below.

Finally I have the HP 7-1 media card reader. Its installed but I can't find a pinchusion to put it in? Same MOBO so it was plugged in once. Its one connector which is nice with five holes. One is plugged up white so only four holes are usable.

Thanks for any help. Just don't want to ffry anything when I turn this back on.

Welcome to the Forums :) I can help with the card reader. It would go on one row of a USB header, and its red wire would go on the pin that has 5-volt power. For Asus motherboards, the pinout pattern is like shown here: http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/mechBgon/A8V_CASE_USB.gif Note that the +5V pins are at the end where there's not a pin missing.

The Firewire pinout on an Asus board, I'd assume that they use the same one all the time (with maybe some old exceptions like the A7V333-RAID and A7N8X Deluxe). So here's a pinout from a K8V SE Deluxe manual: http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/mechBgon/ASUS_2-ROW_FIREWIRE_PINOUT.gif

So your wiring matchup ought to be...

case ~ moboVP ~ +12V (either)
VG ~ GND (any)
TBA+ ~ TPA0+
TBA- ~ TPA0-
TBB+ ~ TPB0+
TBB- ~ TPB0-

For the Asus front-panel pinout, again I'll daringly assume :D that they use the same pattern as other recent models: http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/mechBgon/ASUS_A8V_FRONT_PANEL_HEADER.gif

Good luck, hope that helps :)

Your the man. Didn't fire it up yet. The case came from New Egg without the DVD rom rails. They included double the amount of HD rails instead. When you say either I assume it can high or low in the pincushion rows? That for the firewire pincushion they don't have to all be on the top row just in the right order from left to right?

The hpanel link has it in the right spot on the mobo but its only four pins high and five pins on the low. So looking at the pincushion its 4 by 5. Underneath the hpanel there seems to be two rows of words. Looks like the top row would mean the top row of the pincushion and the words under those words would represent the bottom pins.

H.D.D. LED, Reset SW & Power SW are the three items I need to place in the pin cushion to be pretty much done. So the light for the hard drive the reset switch and the power switch. The top row of words read left to right
HD LED RESET (looks like these would represent the top row of pins)
the words right under that read
PWR LED PWR BTN(like these would represent the bottom row of pins)

Pins look like below 4x5

....
.....

Again, thanks for looking that info up for me.

I believe all the GND pins are what they sound like, electrical ground, and ditto for the +12V pins, so they ought to be interchangeable.

Yeah, Asus has a serious case of upside-downitis. For example: photo showing the power-button wire on the right pins, Asus's markings notwithstanding.

On the board in my photo there, the HDD LED light has its own separate two-pin header to the left of the big one, marked IDELED. There isn't anything too drastic that will happen if you mess up on the pinout on this header/pincushion, it's the USB and Firewire ones where you wouldn't want to miswire :Q

Last question and I should be good. I got the USB info off a google search. Do you have another photo on how the usb should work? I have red, white, green and black from left to right.

From the picture with the power button. Does the top row of words actually represent the bottom row of pins? From the pic it looks that way. I thought the way pwr btn is shown it would be the top row of pins. But it looks like you have the power button on the bottom row?

Exactly right. The silkscreen guys at Asus's factory must've had a few too many drinks or something :D

LOL, probably yes... just try it one way, and if that doesn't work, try it the other way. Like I said, this isn't a risky area. :)

lose this thread down. I don't have anything fire wire so I can't check taht but the USB works and the lights all work. Like you said at first I had the little reset button as the power button but did a switch. Thanks again for the help. Better news is that New Egg did what they said today. They two day aired it. I'll have my rails 10:30 on friday!!!!!! The upgrade is pretty much complete.
