New case fans

A friend asked me to get him new 120mm case fans. He strongly suggested that I get him quiet fans, so I was thinking about Nexus or Vantec.

I've read a few threads in this board and it seems that many people think that Vantec Stealth fans are not that quiet after all and that I should go with Nexus.

The question is, wich model should I get and where? I saw the Vantec Stealths online for $18 each, wich seemed a bit too pricey.

In order of quiet:

Acoustifan
Nexus
Panaflo
Papst & Globe

Anything else sort of just falls in place.

The Panaflos although they are a little louder have virtually no electrical buzz due to the use of fluid bearings.

I would highly recommend any of these fans (I personally like Panaflo and Nexus, but i haven't used Acoustifan before).

The Vantec is a rather noisy (motor hum) fan in my opinion. I'd definitely go with the Nexus: they spin at low rpms therefore their CFM's are quite low so if "good" cooling is not an issue then go with Nexus. I use SilenX and as many ppl on this forum will bash their ethical practices (questionable dba specs) I have not found a quieter fan anywhere. SPCR will not review SilenX's products (although some of SilenX's products are listed), but if you read their "recommended PSU's" SPCR slips in some comments on SilenX. As they state, "quietest 80mm fan EVER encountered." They are unbelievably quiet granted their skeptical business ethics and questionable dba ratings. The 120mm SilenX's are very quiet as well, but do have a slight motor hum to them compared to the inaudible 80mm. G-Luck 🙂

I needed more case fans, and bought 3 Papst 8412NGL's based on favorable info from Silentpcreview and elsewhere. The ones I received had been manufactured in Hungary. Upon their arrival, I tested them side-by-side against the Protechnic Magic MGA8012MS fan (made in China) that came with my Enlight 7250 case. All three Papst have varying amounts of sleeve bearing noise - IMO, one was acceptable (noticable at 6"), one was borderline (noticable at 12"), and the third unacceptable (noticable at 24"). However, all three were significantly noisier than the OEM fan, which is dead-silent even at 3" and moves 50% more air than the Papst! Geez, am I disappointed... Anyone know where I can get more Protechnic Magics?

The Vantec 120mm fans are good, and move decent air, but the smaller ones - 92mm, 80mm, etc., are kind loud and don't move much air.

Panaflo L or a Papst.
Globe makes nice and very quiet ones, but they mgiht not push enough air, are sleeve bearing, and not as easy to find.

Vantec fans are complete crap. They have a lot of motor noise. At 12V, you won't notice it. But as you undervolt, the motor noise stays there. My Vantec un"Stealth" 7V'ed to 950RPM is easiliy louder than my Antec Pro 120mm at 1200RPM or my Nexus 92mm at 1500RPM.

if you're looking for 80mm fans, Arctic Cooling Pro TC (Thermally Controlled" fans are awesome.

I'm not sure about Zalman. I have the 92mm FB123 fan, even with the silent adaptor (1600RPM), my Nexus is easily more quiet than it. the motor, while isn't whiny or clicky, makes an aggressive noise. Even a 5V, that noise doesn't really go away.
