New carpet

has anyone used Home Depot for carpet installation?

what did you all think about the quality of the carpet (wear, stain resistance)?

how was the quality of the installation itself? did they install it properly and has it remained tight (did not become loose or wrinkled)?

i was going to go with a regional carpet company but after checking out Home Depot they seem to have cheaper carpets as well as a standard flat fee for installation. i'll be installing new carpet throughout my entire house.

I suppose it really depends on who they contract their installation to or who does it, it's going to be different everywhere.

But at least you can complain to a large well known retailer about issues and that should be a plus.

Knowing what I do about Home Depot, I would not trust them for anything more than sales of overpriced crap which I would not expect to last too many years.

Are you keeping your old padding? I think Home Depot's deal requires you to replace the padding as well. Either way, you can probably find a better rate going with a local installer.

you should replace the pad when you replace carpet unless the rarity arises that you're replacing something that got damaged soon after install.

HD will simply be subbing out the installation to the lowest bid installer they work with, who will most likely cut corners eveywhere he can.

IMHO you will get better product for the money and service from a local shop. Now, the local shop probably also subs out the labor, but he wouldn't be forced to be as low as the guy for HD.

I saw Home Depot offering it for $79. I paid $199 for the whole home installed from HD a few years ago and the contractors did a great job installing padding/carpeting and cleaning up after themselves. No complaints.

this. i appreciate all the advice so far, especially those cautioning me against going with HD. however, HD is offering $97 installation and when i asked, he said it can be for one room or the entire house, flat fee. so i agree with Jumpem in this regard... i doubt anyone local can beat that.

also, i didn't know Lowes sold carpet. i'll have to check them out. the other thing is the carpet i would buy from local company is about $5.50/sq ft and the one from HD is about $4/sq ft. it adds up if i want to do the entire house... so i'm leaning toward HD (or Lowes) but like someone said, it depends on who they sub it out too. thanks for all the inputs, i'll have to do more research online.

You don't REALLY think they will install a whole house for $79. You WILL pay for it somewhere, in the pad or carpet price. Or in extra charges from the installer (moving furniture, removing existing carpet, etc.)

I just had carpet installed and we originally had Lowes quote us with their $99 installation but it actually ended up costing us less going with a local carpet place. Lowes figured in a lot more waste than the place that we went with. I also found that we had much better service with the local carpet place we choose.

No fucking way I'd ever go with Home Depot or Lowes for carpet or any type of flooring for that matter.

You don't REALLY think they will install a whole house for $79. You WILL pay for it somewhere, in the pad or carpet price. Or in extra charges from the installer (moving furniture, removing existing carpet, etc.)

When we looked at carpet the place we ended up going with quoted us the premium padding and whatever carpet we wanted (this varies greatly depending on what type of carpet you get). There was no installation fee. All fees were based on sq footage and what type of carpet we wanted.

we love the smartstrand carpet, so soft and supposingly very good strain resistance, we don't have any strain yet, so not sure about the claim. check it out.

Whatever you do, don't go cheap, either with material or labor. Get it done pro. We had a small disaster at the house and had to replace floors, etc. When insurance put new carpet in, it was nice at first, but now it's got places with wrinkles, etc. They cut corners/costs.

Yeh when you price out local shops be sure to shop around. It's kind of scary how inflated prices are. We're working with a contractor and carpet the has a sticker price of $5.50 a sq/ft is being sold to us at a "contractor" rate of $3.50 a sq/ft and that's installed and with an 8# pad and tax included. At HD/Lowes that same carpet would be about $4.50 a sq/ft with no pad, no tax and you have to tack on your $99 installation.
