All I'm saying is that it is at a rate greater than inflation and is not sustainable. Using your calculator, thanks by the way, a 2004 35000 product should cost 39509. The increase in unseen safety and other technology is appreciated but not within the budget for most americans.

If we calculate only for inflation. Then that $3000 car from 1976 should cost 11k today. the difference is a 300% increase in cost, which if we continue at this pace a standard sedan will cost 60k in 10years, 90k in 20 and 120k in 30 years. I don't think inflation or anual salaries will keep up.

The value of the dollar has sunk, too. That and increased materials costs, plus increased features costs can easily amount to 10K.

However, you should be able to get a great deal on a Yukon right now.

Also, MSRP on a 2WD Yukon XL is only about 42K , not 50K.

My Yukon XL 4wd SLT 1.5 ton now msrp 48150 http://autos.yahoo.com/2009_gmc_yukon_xl_4wd/

I purchase new in 2004, its MSRP was 40k and the dealer incentive was 5k off.

Here's a 2007 4WD Yukon XL for $29,900. It only has 23,000 miles on it.

I searched and there are 76 Yukon XL's for sale within 50 miles of me. This is only model year 2007-2009 too. They can't give those fuckers away.

Thanks but I have to get away from the trucks. I'm getting soft in my old age and need a softer ride. I did look at the hybrid but for 59k, I didn't feel that green.

No, I wasn't suggesting that particular vehicle. It was just to point out that there are deals out there to have on used (new-to-you) vehicles.

Used luxury cars are a bargain too.

I bought a new BMW in February. I couldn't believe the deals they had. I bought mine for $500 above invoice with 0.9% financing. That was better than Infiniti which was either a discount off of the list price or 1.9% financing. I guess the high end guys are suffering pretty hard.

I say fire everyone at the big three making more than 200k and promote the rest with more reasonable salaries.

Why just the "big three"? If the deals sucked at toyota, audi, honda and acura, why not fire everyone that makes more than 200k in those companies as well?

Agreed, but since these are imports the ability to control them is stronger through tariffs. And they aren't asking for our tax dollars.

Ford didn't ask for tax money. Ford is going it alone, which is why my next truck will be a Ford.

Many Toyota, Honda and Acura models are made here in the USA. Which specific models were you looking at?

I don't disagree that the cost of making and distributing cars needs to be addressed but I just seems odd that the same car with same specs 5 years ago is now 10k more.

Except that they aren't the same specs. There are side airbags standard on many cars now, and tire pressure monitoring systems that have been mandated by the government, and black-box data recorders, and more stringent emissions and crash regulations...

There are numerous expensive add-ons that are largely invisible to the consumer but which drive up costs.

And while I agree, there have also been many forced reductions in prices of many of the other components of the vehicles. The car companies not only are paying for less and less (even in terms of equipment used to make the parts), they are forcing the prices down right in the middle of contracts with no regard to what they had signed or how it will effect the supplier.

I'm not sure if prices really increased that much. Back in the 90s a fully loaded accord ex v6 was what, 26k? You can get one without nav for about the same price, but much better features.

Ummmm....you just suck at the negotiating....or maybe you are picking cars that are in slim pickings?

There's a $3k rebate on an 09 Tundra and an $1k for the 10 in the NE area......

Or maybe you went the route and looked at something like a Rav 4, where they stopped 09 production and have not started 10 production? Rav 4 is kind of a "hot" car now, b/c Toyota made that announcement a month ago and everyone started shopping for one.

Anyays, prices did not increase that much for the base. Most of the increase is in the options. 10 years ago, a 24K top end civic would not be expected, but today, it is. Granted, 10 years ago, you would not see high end stuff like NAV in a civic, so you can see where that $2k comes from for the upper end.

Right now, you can get an 09 Mazda 3 HB w/ sun roof for 16.5K if you play your cards right. 12 years ago, my dad could not talk a Ford Taurus wagon with an 18K sticker lower than 17K.

My gf also just bought an auto corolla S with a sunroof for 15.8K OTD (did not come with floor mats though)....

If you can find an 08 model....jeebus....you'll get $8k off msrp w/o trying. The Tiburon has $8K worth of rebates, and it is all able to be used with 0% financing. 13K for the car right off the bat, and there is still about $1k in negotiating room.
