New car hit by something on freeway, small dent w/ gouge down to the metal

Had a big rig kick up a rock on the freeway and it hit my hood, causing a small dent and very small scratch/gouge that went all the way to the metal. Talking half a pinky fingernail sized gouge.

Same rock also caused 2 very small chips in the windshield... out of my line of sight and pretty much hard to see unless you're looking for them. This I'm not really worried about.

Regarding the gouge, it's not that much of an eyesore, but I guess I'm worried about rust in a couple of years, since the metal is exposed. The estimate to fix this was $508.57.

Is there a way to "seal" this inexpensively? I wouldn't mind have the very small dent removed either.

Depends how important your new car is to you.

If you dont care THAT much, you can use bondo and the spot paint that you can get from the dealership.

I'm sure you can find a body shop that would correct the paint chip and remove the dent for less than $500?

Generally not, they have to rework the hood, and paint the entire hood. It's labor costs.

Exactly what the ins. rep told me. Less than $100 in materials.

There's a new body shop down the road, might take a short drive and get another estimate.

Heh, it's a 2005 VW Jetta, and I do plan to sell it, trade it in next year. Might be worth the $250 to get it fixed. I'll chew it over.

As far as giving a crap, eh, it was a compromise car between me and the wife. She wanted a Ford SUV, I wanted a 2005 G35 coupe (loaded).

*thinks me got "el screwed" in the compromise*

Think about it, you can repair the car for $250. It would normally cost $400-$500 to replace the hood and paint it, and another $1000 to replace the windshield. Id do it now or asap.

I think you both got the short end of that stick

Edit: Since you're going to sell it, definitely get it fixed.
