New car care questions about floor mats

My new 2002 Honda Accord SE came with 4 beige floor mats (otherwise a $189 option I think) embossed with the Accord logo on them. So far we've been really careful to keep them straight and clean.

This morning I was talking to my boss about how careful my wife and I are to keep the interior as clean as possible. I told her about the $99 trunk liner (local Honda dealership price) we bought last weekend to prevent spills and keep the trunk carpet spotless.

She said it would be a good idea to buy generic floor mats (matching beige color obviously) from CostCo for around $50 and use those instead of the original Accord floor mats. Save the Honda Accord floor mats for when we sell the car. Does that sound like a good idea? I think it does.

Who you callin cheap wanna-be cop? :p

Yeah I think I should buy the generic Costco floor mats and save the Accord floor mats for when we sell the car.

Or you can relax and enjoy your brand new car and not be overly concerned about 5 years from now or however long it'll be until you sell your car. ;)

i seriously doubt anyone will care that about your floormats when buying a car. Remember, that is considered normal wear and tear.

Screw that! I love the factory floor mats in my Civic. They fit perfectly around the shape of the car, they have the hooks to hold it in place, and they are very soft, and the little Civic logo looks cute and allows you to remember what kind of car you're driving should you forget.

2 other things: Cars often sell with no floor mats, esp. if you trade it into the dealer when you sell it--they take them out!
And, when I'm shopping for a car, I don't care about floor mats. If I was looking at 2 '02 Accords and one was real nice and yours was a piece of crap except for those nice new floor mats, do you think I'd really pick yours?

Although if you're planning on going this route and spending $50, why not buy another set of the REAL ones from H and A for $64.80?

hehe... this thread reminds me of the episode from "everybody loves raymond"

how ray's mom has that plastic cover over the couch.

:)

you bought the car to enjoy it.
not to keep it as a sacred temple so you can resell it.

of course, you should keep it clean and neat.
but that doesn't mean you should go take the mats out

personally, i didn't buy the mats. if they came with the car, i would've probably tried to sell it back to the dealer.

when i got my integra, they were charging about 100 for the mats.
:)

i've been happy with the aftermarket floor mat for $25.00

Use the ones you have. If the look like pooh after 5 years or whatever then buy the cheapies from CostCo when you sell it. I really don't think anyone buying a 3+ year old car will care about OEM floor mats anyway. Why go without the utility from them if they will end up lookin' fine? Just my though :)

You dumb ignorant ass how'd I guess you'd say something like that? :p (j/k)

Maybe I shouldn't buy the floor mats, I don't think they attach/hook into the carpet like my Accord floor mats do.

I'd only buy them for resales sake if you are positive that when time comes to sell that the rest of the vehicle will be within 5% of immaculate. If it has lots of dings, dents, small scratches, they arent gonna care about the mats and you will have wasted money. However, if your'e vehicle is exceptional and your care of it can clearly be seen above everyone else selling the same car, I think it would only add to the premium someone would pay for a vehicle in said condition.

Here's another way to look at this....

I bought a new computer. It came with mushkin RAM. Should I save the mushkin RAM and stick some generic RAM in there for now so when I sell the computer later it will have the original "like new" mushkin RAM?

everyone's so obsessed with keeping their stuff mint it defeats the purpose of getting it in the first place. i had friends that bought comics but never touched them or removed them from the plastic wrap to keep them mint. there's a fine line between taking care of your stuff and never using it.

floor mats are the type of thing you woudn't even really notice/consider without it being pointed out. i'm not going to turn down a car because it didn't have floor mats that i could pick up, can you honestly imagine someone going "no, i refuse to buy your car because the floor mats are dirty."

if you keep the interior detailed and the exterior waxed and treated right, the mats are going to look great anyway and it's not going to matter when you spring for that autotrader ad. spend the $50 on some zaino and terry cloth. it'll do a hell of a lot more than costco floor mats

that'd be a bad analogy... since a used ram vs new ram is very difficult to distinguish.

a brand new floor mat vs 3-4 year old... you should definately be able to tell.

the wear and tear comparison is not there.

a better comparison would be putting an aftermarket cotton seat cover over your leather seats.

Are they cloth floormats? If they are, go get a couple of cans of scotch guard and spray them. It will keep them from staining and if you re-spray them after you clean them they'll last a long time. Been my experience anyway.

I have always bought rubberized mats for my my cars that are custom made for the car. They are about $50 .... Canon makes some and so does WeatherLite. When you wanna impress someone you take em out, the carpet is incredibly clean... and I get compliments.

I went to go get some for my RSX and my local dealer had custom ones that said RSX On it :D

So now my carpet is neat (I also scotchguarded it) and now I have rubber matts that once againt ell me what car I am driving.

I agree with ZeroBurn, most people would be better with some Zaino. But if you already use em, then get the new matts :)

You can get rubber all-weather mats for the Accord at the link I posted above as well :)

Hmm i doubt you'd ever make up the difference in resale that you'd lose paying for the mats - plus u won't have pimp honda mats!

uh....

"We'll get floormats so that we don't wear out the carpet, after all, floormats are a lot easier to replace than carpet"

"Damn, these new floormats are really nice, I wouldn't want to get them dirty by putting my feet on them... I'll save those for special occasions"

"Hmm, this second set of floormats is really too good for everyday driving, too, I should save these for when I have guests in the car..."

"Yeah, these paper bags make pretty decent disposable floormats... and cheap, too!"

They're FLOORMATS. You're SUPPOSED to step on them.

Is this thread some sort of joke? That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Buy cheap floormats to save your originals and then put the originals back when you resell the car? BOOOOOOWAHHAHAHAHA HAHAAHHAAHA HAHAHAHAH OMGLMAOROTFLPIMP!!!!!

I never understand people who are like this. I knew a friend growing up and his family would put plastic covers on their sofa, and you had to sit on this plastic cover always. Like, wtf, dude. Some people....
