New California law to impose fine for being distracted while driving

The really sh!tty part about this is that if a cop sees you looking away from the road for like 1 instant he can pull you over as being distracted. I don't have a problem with pulling over people that are truly distracted but there's lots of room for abuse here.

On the other hand, something has to be done about people doing stupid stuff while driving. I can't count the number of times I've been behind someone who was weaving, passed them, and noticed they were yapping on a phone/applying makeup/eating/reading/etc. It's ridiculous. This was only reinforced for me Monday when I got rear-ended; the woman was so busy babbling on the phone she never even hit the brakes. :|

Fausto, belive me, I've seen PLENTY of distracted drivers. Its just hard to make a law that defines what is ticketable.

Its kinda like the law about how loud your car can be. The law says under 92 or 93 decibels. However, cops can ticket at their discretion.

True, but they can pace you and give you a speeding ticket for 1mph over as well...doesn't mean they're going to. Any law has potential for abuse by enforcement (although I think this one could be a bit more specific).

I'm glad they're imposing that down there. They've got that offense up here too. It's nice to know that people have some sort of motivation to keep their eyes on the road.

Yes room for abuse, but like fausto said, there are just too many people who shouldn't be on the road. I've seen people with a full newspaper open in front of them spending more time looking at it than the road.

i hope they fine and pull over all the rubber neckers who slow down to look at a crash or of the sort.
That would be so sweet I would literally cry from pure joy.

even though i'm a big violator (blame my nextel and dell dj), i think it's long overdue. nearly every time I see someone driving really badly, some sort of electronic distraction is involved.

It's really to bad that common sense needs to be legislated.

I love the idea. Just this morning I got stuck behind some moron that was hitting his brakes when there was no one in front of him. Turn out yes boys and girls he was driving and taking on his cell phone.

The worst I've seen is someone in the left lane in a Town Car who kept sticking his head almost completely under the dash. He did this repeatedly and kept wandering over into the next lane. Boy was I glad to get around that guy.

It's the same as seatbelt rules. Sometimes even grown adults have to be treated like children, if they're going to act like it. If there was more common-sense and intelligence behind the actions of the average joe we'd not see so many people legislating others to act in a reasonable manner.

:-/ i dunno about this one, the motivation behind it is good but i could see it being really tricky to enforce. plus, it hasn't made it through the assembly, and the article didn't say if schwarzenneger would veto it (all but one republican voted against the bill)

i saw this on the news and they were askign peopel on the street for their opinion and some chick said, well now where am i supposed to put my makeup int he morning. A lot of people like me, eat breakfast, get dressed, talk ont he phone, put on makeup, read the paper in their car to save time.....i was stunned!:Q

Glad I don't live in California anymore.

I'm glad I've never been to CA.

Cali is beautiful, and if all you do is visit, you don't have to worry about all the taxes and rules.

That said, sure this law has potential for abuse but honestly I think it's worth it. Of course, it would be even better if they actually made it HARD to get a license, but that's never going to happen

yesterday when i was driving home (405N) i looked in the rear-view mirror and saw the guy behind me holding two drum sticks and i guess drumming his dashboard to what was on the radio.. he was pretty into it.

i also saw a girl in her car reading a book while driving down wilshire.. i never saw her look up to pay attention to what was going on around her

I admit i do take my eyes off of the road or pay attention to other things for brief moments, but never this bad!

I hope the boneheads who drive with small dogs on their laps get pulled over without hesitation. That is one of the dumbest things ever, and I see it all the time.

oh noes...

i do my eating while driving.. though safe.. i guess time to make changes then.

I admit i do my eating in the car, but then i am very very careful about it. I have never ever lost control, the burger is always in one hand.. and i am always looking at the road.. never actually looking down. If i do its very very rare.

On the other hand, talking on the cell, i do that far more often, and still the road gets its priority first.. if im on the phone and driving the other person better know im going to cut them off in a situation and drop the fscking phone.

As for makeup, i have no needs. Reading stuf.. i dont do.. if im reading a map, i pull over.. however if im looking up mapquest directions, im usually doing it when im at a stop light or i pull over.
