My mom wants to get a burner so she can burn music on cd's and stuff, so I was wondering, should we buy now, or wait for the new Yamaha CD burners I heard were coming out as well as other 32x cd burners? My mom says she can wait for whatever time is needed. Right now we're figuring on buying the 24x Lite-On for $162. Any suggestions?

$162? Get it for less at newegg or something, but 24x is fast enough for now.

Whatever CDR you decide on make sure to check prices on pricewatch.com. You'll find 24x Lite On for ~$95 shipped. Also keep eye on AT Hot Deals forum as there're usually plenty of CDRW deals around. I use myself SCSI but I read only positive posts about Lite On. GL

From review in StorageReview.com

<< Lite-On's latest 24X burner provides impressive levels of performance.

In summary, its strengths include:

SMART-Burn optimizes write speeds and prevents buffer underruns
Inclusion of Nero Burning ROM software
Lowest-priced 24X burner on the market
Quick access times
Excellent application-level read performance
Error correction during CD-DA playback ties the best SR has tested
24X write speeds are some of the fastest SR has measured

The LTR-24102B's weak areas are:

Sparse documentation
No IDE cable included in retail package
Slow audio extraction at the beginning of a CD
Read speeds with CD-RW media are significantly slower than competition
Packet-writing formats trail the competition significantly

Overall, the LTR-24102B performs well enough to garner serious consideration by power users. Its combination of low cost, quick read speeds and spirited writes keep Lite-On's flagship competitive with current Leaderboard champ Plextor. Only slow initial DAE speeds and poor read performance with CD-RW media keep the LTR-24102B from supplanting the PX-W2410TA outright.

ah... so many new cd-rw to choose from and not enough reviews :(

I'm deciding between the (plextor is out of my mind for the price even though i know it's good):
LiteOn 24x10x40 Retail $165CND
Sony 24x10x40 OEM $159CND
AOpen 24x10x40 $152CND
