What do you think? Maybe a Q9400 instead of the 8400?
What about the board choices? Mainly on the Intel side.
I read that it's possible to unlock the 4th core in the AMD using Gygabyte boards so... 🙂

PC is for gaming, movies, office and I'm planning to keep it for 5 years at least.

5 years or longer... Spend a bit more on the CPU and get a Q9550.

330 ? wich should be about 400-420$ because components are more expensive here.
BTW the AMD components cost 333? and the Intel components cost 300?

About the GPU I'm thinking about the GTS 250 or the less expensive HD 4770.
I know the GTS 250 is a bit better but also 35? more expensive.

wait 400-420 for the whole thing??? or just the cpu? Good luck tyring to build a machine that will last you 5 years for less than $1000. That is if you dont plan to upgrade...if you plan to upgrade memory or gpu along the way, then maybe a few hundred less, but that wqill be tough.

I'll tell what I've got so far.

INTEL
Asus GeForce PCI-E GTS250 DK 512Mb GDDR3 - 135,00 ?
Antec Three Hundred - 54,40 ?
Hitachi SATA-2 500Gb 7200rpm 16Mb - 52,90 ?
LC Power 550W Green Power 140mm V2.2 - 41,90 ?
Asus Skt775 - P5Q SE iP45 - 92,00 ?
Pack 2x 2048Mb DDR2 Corsair XMS2 DHX CL5 PC-6400 (800) Dual Channel - 59,90 ?
Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 2.66Ghz 6Mb FSB1333 - 209,00 ?
TOTAL: 645,10 ?

AMD
Asus GeForce PCI-E GTS250 DK 512Mb GDDR3 - 135,00 ?
Antec Three Hundred - 54,40 ?
Hitachi SATA-2 500Gb 7200rpm 16Mb - 52,90 ?
LC Power 550W Green Power 140mm V2.2 - 41,90 ?
Gigabyte SktAM3 - GA-MA790XT-UD4P 790X - 118,00 ?
Pack 2x 2048Mb DDR3 OCZ CL7 PC3-12800 (1600) Platinum Edition - 79,90 ?
AMD PhenomII X3 Triple Core 2.8Ghz SktAM3 720 Black Edition - 133,00 ?
TOTAL: 615,10 ?

Gigabyte's P43 board for intel is cheap and has been flawless with my E8400 since last July. I run at stock but it's supposed to be trivial to overclock to 3.6 GHz with PC800 RAM.

Both those builds are almost double your first budget...

That 330? budget is for just the CPU, mobo, and RAM (which add up to 361? with his Q9400 setup).

Do you plan on upgrading much or is this just a set-it-and-forget-it approach where you just sink all the money you can in at once and hope it lasts 5 years? 😕 And with a resolution of 1280x1024 you don't even need a GTS250 in my opinion, unless you play some freakishly graphics heavy games (no mainstream game I can think of needs that much power at that res without ridiculous amounts of filters etc.). If you have future upgrade plans I'd say don't bother with an E8400 and just get an E5200, save whatever money you can and then upgrade to a nice Q9XXX series (or Q8XXX depending on your uses/software development in the future), aside from a few games and processor heavy tasks, you'll notice no difference.

Thanks for the input.

Well when I say 5 years it doesn't mean I won't be upgrading if necessary especially the GPU. But I guess I won't game that much by that time 🙂.
My main doubt is about the motherboard. Any big difference between i43 and i45? What would you recommend? A cheaper one?

Why Phenom II x3......if 6you are hoping to unlock the 4th core...remember that they are being sold as PhenomII x3 for a reason....mainly one of the cores was bad...

With that said I just Love my phenom II x4.........lightning fast!!

Trying to build a system that will game at acceptable levels for 5 years seems unreasonable. Build a system that will work for a while but accept that to continue to play current games you'll need to make upgrades.
