My computer is about 6 years old and I'm finally getting around to replacing it. I really don't play games anymore (probably due to the age of my computer), but I would like this to be able to play some of the more popular ones today (fallout 3, new fear, new stalker). I don't need great performance and impeccable graphics, just for them to work, and for this to be a legitamite gaming PC for a few years.

However this is mostly going to be a media PC for me. I'm really questioning if I will ever use a TV again.

I will retain my current monitor (23 inch samsung), keyboard and mouse.

I'm aiming for an i7 build which comes out to about $1300, I could probably cut about $300-400 if I drop to a quad core, but I'm really leaning toward the i7 because for whatever reason I feel it will last me longer.

I would be open to overclocking, but don't really care about it either.

Also I should note, I'm definitely an Intel guy, I prefer ATI, but I'm open to nVidia. I would prefer to have a single GPU

Intel Guy is burning big bucks for an HTPC/gaming rig which will not be OC'ed.

Well you could save about $150-250 on a AMD Phenom II x4 system over the i7 build, but since your an Intel guy, you'll be paying for the i7 over the AMD system. Now you could go with a C2Q system and have about the same savings over the i7 build, but that would be up to you to decide.

You didn't mention which OS that you were going to use. I'd recommend at least Vista Home Premium 64bit for an OS, if you don't already have plans.
