New Build Won't Post

gameover

Junior Member
First let me say I'm ashamed that I can solve this myself. I've built about a dozen new systems over the last few years and never had this problem.

I picked up Fry's mother board and cpu combo last weekend and I can't get a new build to post. It powers on but I get no video out.

Below the system pieces
MB - ECS 6100PM-M2
CPU - AM2 x2 4200
Ram - Adata DDR2 800 2x 2G - 1.8v
PSU - Antec 430w 24 pin

Its all in a Antec p180 and I've tried with a 6600gt and with the on board video.

Basically everything powers on but I get no video. I've tried checking all the normal basic mistakes.

Extra 4 pin power plugged in? - Check
Memory in both slots and each stick on it own - Check
Everything setup up just MB / CPU / Ram / 1 Hard drive - Check
Jumper settings all correct - Check
Read mother board book for anything I missed - Check
Mother board is dead? - Returned and replaced with a new one already
CPU is dead? - Returned and replaced with a new one already
PSU Bunk? - Confirmed it works with another system
Bios reset? - Several times, via jumper and battery removal

The only thing I haven't checked is the ram because its brand new and I couldn't have possibly gotten 2 bad sticks...... I also don't have anything to test these with.

What in the hell am I missing..........?

Edit - Ram ruled out bought some cheap DDR2 667 rated for 1.8v also. Same symptoms.

Maybe you fried the ram with static ? Who knows, you don't have 1 single stick of ddr2 ram in a different system anywhere ?

Had a problem JUST like this recently. 2 things I discovered and not sure which one fixed the problem: 1. The video card was suggested at a higher rating than my PSU could handle, pulled it out. 2. The RAM is what got me. 2 sticks, one was bad. Put in replacement RAM and everything posted just fine.

Just some ideas. Let us know how it turns out.

Did you check to see if the monitor or its connector is bad?

Yup, I'm using the monitor to type this.

did you try with one stick ram boot up?

I tried using just one of the sticks in every slot in every possible combo.

Any post beeps at all?

I can only get a beep if there is no ram installed. With no ram installed I get just 1 continuous beep.

Got to be the ram since you seem to eliminated everything else.

I'm pretty much at this point. I didn't think it would be possible to get 2 bunk sticks of ram. Even if 1 stick is dead the system should be fine. The only other thing I can think of is that the Ram and motherboard don't like each other.

Sorry about topic in the wrong forum. Didn't notice there was a computer help.

Did you try it out of the case? I realize there have been several boards involved, but you're at the end of the troubleshooting trail.

It's that or the memory. It's all that's left. Unless there's a compatibility problem as you suggested, but it seems unlikely.

What are you using for a CPU cooler? Does it have a four pin connector?

I'm not currently using a CPU fan with a 4 pin connection. I'm using an old retail AMD heatsink / fan combo. I noticed the difference when I first got everything but I ruled that out early. From what I understand the 4th pin is for fan speed control and not necessary.

I also intended to run with out a CPU fan plugged in once I move everything to an HTPC case. In about a month the board / CPU are supposed to go into an Antec Fusion with a Sythce Mini Ninja on top that would sit about 2 inches from 2 1200mm fans.

I considered trying everything out of the case but haven't yet. I guess just head back to Fry's and try a new fan.

I actually already tried new ram. I edited the original post but forgot it out of my last post. I tested with some new cheap DDR 2 667.

I did just get back from Fry's to rule out a fan and noticed something wierd. I saw several fans listing support for AM2 boards and almost all had 3 pin connectors. I finally found a 4 pin and it was the only one labeled as supporting Phenoms. The board is an AM2+ so now I'm thinking maybe its a new requirement for AM2+ boards or the bios are gay on the ECS and require a 4 pin fan connector.

Fingers crossed, going to check.

And it's a bust!

Just tried the system on cardboard with an am2+ 4 pin fan, with 2 sets of ram in every possible combo and NOTHING!

Just to recap folks

2 different mother boards
2 different CPUs
2 different sets of Ram both rated at 1.8v
2 different PSUs
On board video + discrete video card tested
2 different wall sockets not on the same circuit
24 pin and 4 pin power connector plugged in every time.
A bunch of CMOS resets
no magnetized screw driver
components tested outside and inside the case.
Jumpers checked vs manual

and no post no video. The only beep code I can get is 1 solid tone if I don't install ram

After returning the first mother board I've babied everything. Anti-static bags, grounding myself first, etc...

I think the only thing I'm left with is.................. God. Yes God didn't want me to take advantage of the Fry's $60 combo.

But if any of you can think of something I've missed throw it at me.

Stupid question, but I thought I would at least throw it out there. Did you use two different power cables attached to the two different PSUs? I have had bad ones in the past.
