New Build won't boot

UPDATE: Problem found, replaced the memory with 512 stick from an Emachines, and it now boots up. Now, how to find out what memory is compatible with this board?

Like the title says, new build (Christmas present for bother), won't boot. I am getting power, just nothing on the screen. I just cannot figure out why this is happening. Video card and ram were pulled from a well-working Dell 8300. Hard drive and optical drives were pulled from a well-working Dell xps 400.

pic of setup

Spec's...

Antec SLK1650B w/350W
Gigabyte GA-K8U Uli 1689 Athlon 64 Skt754
Athlon 64 2800+
512MB (2x256) Samsung DDR333
Maxtor 80GB SATA
128MB 9800 Pro
NEC ND-3550
Sony CDRW

Help is of course apprecciated.

Are you positive that the memory from the DELL is compatible with your Gigabyte motherboard. My guess is that it is NOT.

All memory is not the same. Modern mobos are very fussy about memory. Dell in particular is very fussy about memory so it could be the default timings on the memory isn't compatible with your mobo.

I doubt it's the memory because even if the SPD timings were wrong, it would likely still POST, you'd just get a lot of memory errors.

Does that mobo have an ATX12 power socket - it's a 4 pin molex usually near the CPU that's a seperate power connection from the main mobo power connector. Most modern mobos have them and they won't POST if it's not plugged in. Common mistake.

It does, and it's plugged in. If you look at the pic linked in the OP, I assume you mean the one shown just above the HSF.

Well, you were right. Problem found, replaced the memory with 512 stick from an Emachines, and it now boots up. I had no idea some basic Samsung PC2700 would not work with this mobo.

So, now I gotta get some different ram for this thing, and I'm not finding anything in regards to what memory would be best for this board. 🙁

Test the PSU with a PSU tester or a digital multimeter and get back to us.

Well, I am getting power. That doesn't seem to be the problem.

The problem could ALWAYS be power, just so you know. You wouldn't know that until you test for it and power issues CAN affect RAM. I just wanted to confirm your PSU was delivering the necessary amount of power and my suggestion was a follow up in case something easier didn't work (like swapping RAM modules).

Anyways, can you confirm your motherboard model? I can't find a GA-K8U only GA-K8V.

Thanks. THIS is what I ordered, did they make a mistake in their model name?

Well, actually, Newegg has it, and after reading their reviews, it seems Corsair VS will work fine in this board. And that is pathetic considering Corsair VS is what was put in the Dell 8300, replacing the samsung 512MB, with zero problems.
